U S Marines and Nicaraguans clashed as Shelby Mayor W N Dorsey and officers hid inside City Hall. Eleven men were arrested in the first police move as a fireworks conflict erupted after a holiday display. a fire hose was used to hold back rioters while officers planned further arrests.
A dynamite blast at about midnight shattered windows within a three block radius and injured three people at the Scranton Suburban Daily plant in Scranton Pennsylvania. Authorities suspect a reprisal by lawless elements against the institution, not an individual. The building was empty at the time and New Year celebrants in nearby halls were struck by debris.
Montgomery fire killed three firefighters and seriously hurt Fire Chief Nixon as a blaze in downtown Montgomery struck the Carriage Works plant. The early morning fire threatened the downtown area and halted operations.

In Walla Walla on January 1 authorities said A L Bidwell was killed by poison in his breakfast. His wife Bessie Mae Bidwell and her alleged lover V Treston Rac Clark were arrested after the death, with Mrs Bidwell accusing Clark of lacing hog brains with a deadly poison.

Anaconda January report says Sergeant Fred Coryell of Anaconda was seriously wounded last Friday near Quilali in the fighting between U S marines and Nicaraguan outlaws. He has not fired since shortly after 1919 when he was married. He is 37. His father George F. Coryell lives at Cody, Wyo. Coryell enlisted in the marine corps in May 1917.

The eastern half braces for continued cold with brief fair spells and possible warmer pockets Tuesday, while New England and Florida face colder spells. The Midwest reports numerous deaths from sub zero temperatures with 19 deaths in Chicago over two days and no relief in sight as the cold wave extends west of the Rockies.

Circumstantial evidence ties Dr. Charles McMillan to the death of Mrs. Amelia Appleby wealth widow of a Chicago inventor. Deputies found in McMillan's apartment jewelry reportedly valued at about 50 000 dollars including rings bracelets and necklaces believed to belong to the late Mrs. Appleby. The search was conducted at the request of Captain William Bright head of the homicide squad after information that the jewelry had disappeared. Mary Woods and her son Kenneth, seven, of Detroit, suffocated in an apartment fire early today. They were visiting the Frederick Wagner family during the holidays. An overheated stove is believed to have started the blaze while the Wagner family were away at a New Year party.
