Keith Ewing 18 collapsed on a basketball court in Mercedes Texas during a high school game between Haloburg and Mercedes. He died as the fourth period ended, with reports attributing his death to a heart attack. Ewing was captain and star of Mercedes team.
Philadelphia police capture three suspects in the Herat National Bank robbery gang led by Meh machine gunn Dlazhiga. Meh gang member Ferguson is dead after a firefight. $47,240 was seized from bags in a raid on Ambler and a raided house in Marchwent. Police say the total seizures exceed $950,000 believed to be proceeds from multiple holdups. Ferguson, a former convict, was killed by four machine gun bullets after barricading himself in a bathroom and opening fire.
In Miami on February 6, rumors of a kidnapping and assassination attempt against Giuseppe Zangara, who wounded five and attacked President-elect Franklin D. Roosevelt, led Sheriff Dan Hardie to bar all from the county jail. Sheriff Merdie replaced, ordered guards at the elevator to monitor access to county offices on the 29th floor, and require escort for all visitors.
Hackensack police pursue inquiry into unnamed matter with secrecy described as ongoing. Details remain sparse as investigators proceed, with continuation noted on later pages.
A bulletin from Miami hospital states Mayor Anton Cermak remains in a grave condition after being wounded in the Roosevelt assassination attempt. Dr Nichol and staff report only limited improvement as Mrs Ellen Cermak remains at the bedside and travels to inform relatives.
Lincoln Feb 16 Farmers marched to the Nebraska capital presenting demands for relief to a joint session of the legislature. About 4,000 demonstrators carried banners and called for mortgage relief. The petition urged prompt enactment of a law like Iowa’s moratorium and included requests for bank losses repayment, farm debt relief, wage relief, and federal financing of farm notes at 1 percent interest.
Chicago, Fab 18. Indictments by the federal grand jury charge wealthy sugar men with racketeering in a liquor scheme. They allegedly gathered 96,000,000 in profit from 40 years spanning 1932 to 1992. Jonah Deskin, described as corn sugar king, led the defense. Included are Scott S. Durand of Lake Forest and other affluent sugar manufacturers.
Seattle scene as 5000 to 6000 unemployed protesters besieged the county city building for two days. Deputies and police evicted demonstrators after a tense, nonviolent stand, dispersing the crowd with water from hoses and guiding leaders to new headquarters. Demonstrators briefly regrouped and sang Solidarity Forever before dispersing.
New York Feb 16 Professor David Saville Murrey of Columbia University historian said there was a legally provided method by which a successor to President would never be chosen if President elect Roosevelt were assassinated. The same view was shared by colleague Dixon Ivan Fox. Murrey conjectured John Nance Garner would probably become president, though he could not say with certainty.
Harvard Observatory reports telegram from L C Peltier of Delphas Ohio announcing a sixth magnitude comet discovery. Position given as Right Ascension 42h 18m and Declination 62° north. Cambridge Massachusetts dated February 16. The find adds to recent minor celestial sightings noted by astronomers.
Washington February 16 Rep Godfrey G Goodwin of Minnesota aged 60 fell to his death from a window on a hotel high floor near the capital He had vertigo and was under medical care A verdict of accidental death was returned He was to retire from Congress March 4.
Hawaii Senate considers a resolution to remove Attorney General Harry Howitt over handling of the Masse assault case. Senator Thvel Prank says Howitt’s conduct has brought him into public disrepute. Action on the resolution deferred until March amid questions about alleged pressures.
A special Senate committee urges a further $150,000 annual reduction in state and sectoral appropriations for Montaur State College for each coming year. The panel, led by Senator Burr and including Armstrong and Holt, delivered its report to the Senate late yesterday. findings sent to the finance and appropriations committee.
Kong Beach Fla Feb 16 UP Curly Guy a young Welsh adventurer was acquitted tonight of the charge that he murdered 39 year old Captain Walter Vanderwell aboard the vagabond raised yacht Carma on the eve of a world cruise. A quarrel between Guy and Vanderwell was offered by the state as motive for the killing.
Denver police intensified a Lookout Mountain search for Charles Boettcher Jr a wealthy Denver broker kidnapped Sunday night Investigators focused on two abductors after Mrs Anan Lou Boettcher failed to identify Arnold Swanson a former Denver policeman The nightly Denver paper carried a repeated ransom note from the kidnappers reading I am ready to return Mabel and demanding £60 000 for the clubman’s safe release.
The Los Angeles area faced a simulated air raid during the annual naval maneuvers as planes from the Saratoga carrier attacked coastal cities including San Pedro Long Beach Venice and Culver City while the Blue fleet repelled a San Francisco strike. The Lexington and other black fleet ships were spotted off San Francisco and the sunfire defense preserved the coast.
Kalispell February 16 Bob Bales was held in the county jail awaiting arrival of an agent to confirm if he is Charles Kinsey, wanted for murder in Oregon. Deputy Ricke sald the man matched the description but showed little resemblance to the circular image. Bales denied being the suspect and claimed to be the son of Tu Win Bales of Kentucky, Mo.
