Fort Saver Arkansas reports eleven foot rise in the Arkansas river with higher water expected. Relief for destitute residents continues as donations arrive and officials authorize expenditures. In Covington and Newport Kentucky more flooding imperils buildings and forces evacuations. New York markets show stock strength after early weakness amid Rail and Pacific railroad notes.
The Pennsylvania Railroad provides 4000 dollars for flood sufferers with 2000 to be sent from Pittsburgh and 1000 each along the Pan Handle and Pittsburg Fort Wayne and Chicago routes. Robert Garrett orders free freight and telegraph use on the Baltimore and Ohio line for flood relief. Money market reports provide rate details through February 12.
A Chicago special dispatch summarizes Minnesota and Northwest opinions on James G. Logan for the 1884 Republican nomination. Sinclair of Winona says Logan could be a second choice. Stone of Montevideo doubts Logan will get Minnesota votes. Michell of Duluth favors Blaine with Logan as second choice. Other editors from Oregon to Montana express mixed views on Logan versus Blaine and Arthur.
The Secretary of War allocates 300000 for immediate relief. Gen Ames Beckwith will head supplies in Cincinnati with headquarters there. Boats will be chartered and officers assigned to supervise distribution, mirroring last year’s Mississippi relief efforts.
In San Francisco lawyer J K Finlay is arrested for felony uttering a fraudulent divorce decree. George Wager bought what appeared to be a divorce decree, remarried, and learned the decree was forged leaving him with two wives. Wheat and corn prices are noted with March and February deliveries.
Gov. Cleveland revokes the requisition for Dan Vermillas in New York. The Milwaukee Journal reports Bay View rolling mills may cut wages by twenty percent for about one hundred workers, risking a shutdown if rejected amid weak iron trade.
February 12 report from Wasnixoton states the supply of one dollar notes is exhausted and twos nearly so. Treasurer Wyman received two packages from an Ohio bank claiming to contain $1,000 each. One package was $530 short and the other contained two pieces of flannel.
The Daily Star publishing company is incorporated in San Francisco with a stated capital stock of 20 dollars and a paid in amount by February 12. The filing notes the company name Lew Publication and its incorporation date as February 12 in the record.
