Reports from February 9 describe catastrophic floods across Ohio Valley towns including Wheeling Marietta Parkersburg and Cincinnati areas. Homes destroyed, bridges washed away, thousands homeless, relief efforts launched as rivers rise.
Wool market notes from Wool Arm New York show demand for domestic fleece prices 12 45 to 18 40 and unwashed 10 25 with Texas fleece at 14 27. In Caldwell Idaho Lyone Jones fatally stabbed and arrested in Boise following an altercation. In San Francisco Percy Jacobus, embezzling secretary of Eureka Consolidated Mining, freed on 30 000 bail, rearrested on nine forgery charges.
Strikes by weavers shut down five mills, leaving thirteen mills closed and about 7,000 operatives idle with weekly wage losses surpassing $20,000. Production for the week totals 125,000 pieces from a normal 160,000 despite a stock of 155,000 pieces. In Pour Lane Oregon a board of trade meeting saw resolutions urging lawmakers to repudiate the Northern Pacific land grant forfeiture.
In Annavolis on February 9 the court martial for naval cadets in the hazing case began. Cadet Fred Parker pleaded guilty. Others from the First Class including Jos Tremsky Maxey McSon and Brush stand trial.
Directors of the National Park Improvement Company held a special meeting on February 9 to appoint a committee to prepare a directors plan addressing the company’s financial difficulties. So far $125,000 has been spent on improvements.
Live stock receipts show 7 000 cattle steady to light packing rates 6 15 to 7 19 per cwt. 900 calves steady shipping 5 75 to 6 50. Sheep receipts 600 steady to strong inferior to fair 2 50 to 4 25 per cwt with choice 5 40 to 6 00.
Chang Woo Yeang a Chinese native appeared at the clerk's office seeking U.S. citizenship. He stated he came at age fifteen and has lived here continuously except for a visit to China. The clerk denied relief under the May 6 1882 act barring Chinese from citizenship.
The governor of West Virginia telegraphs Senators and Representatives urging an increase to one million dollars for relief work. He seeks broader support by contacting governors of other states on the river to pressure for action through their congressional members.
The Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad Camp issues a circular noting through freight via California with connections from Kansas City and Atchison to the Pacific via Atchison or Denver without breaking bulk. It suggests Burlington may join the through car service, opposing Union Pacific and its Omaha allies. Mexican Central officials’ presence sparks talk of coordinated traffic between Burlington, Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe and Mexican Central Railways for Mexican shipments.
The New York Sun reports Barnum defends his elephant as sacred and white in a "white" sense like Barnum himself. He cites a bill of sale and letters from Frank Vincent Jr. and King Theban to prove whiteness and sanctity.
