Washington Feb 6 The United Mine Workers convention raised John L Lewis’s salary from 12000 to 25000 a year amid protests from many delegates. The vote also boosted Philip Murray Thomas Kennedy and Ellis Searles while increasing other pay scales. Delegates argued for smaller raises as some spoke of hungry miners, signaling potential AFL unity strains.
Washington reports to the State Department that an American Catholic missionary was kidnapped in Manchukuo by bandits on February 6. The missionary is Father Clarence Burts of the Maryknoll Mission, Qusining, New York.
Twenty nine WPA workers suffered exposure and frost bite when their truck stalled in near zero temperatures near Highland City ghost mining camp twelve miles south of Butte. A snow plow and truck failure halted the crew on a WPA road project as a blizzard loomed. County Surveyor Jack Healy sent a search party. the group was found around five in the afternoon and most men received first aid for exposure.
Washington February sixth. The revised administration soil conservation subsidy bill debuted in the senate amid bipartisan challenges to its constitutionality. Democratic and a Republican independent defended it as an honest effort to aid farmers through a dual system of federal aid for soil conservation. Opponents denounced it as a subterfuge to evade Supreme Court limits on the AAA program and potentially socialist in scope. House dissent criticized broad power for agriculture officials to control production. Votes were pressed for a senate decision before adjournment to advance repeal of three AAA auxiliary laws tying taxes to production controls.
In Oakland California on February 6 a fifteen ounce newborn girl named Nancy Anne Vogt proved normal by sucking her 94 inch thumb. Nurses led by Mrs Luelle Church bathed the baby with sterile vegetable oil or a cotton wad on a stick. The premature infant, Vogt’s first child, remains wrapped in cotton as doctors monitor.
