New York report says James A. Stillman and Annie A Sellman left on the steamship Olympic for a Europe voyage described as a trial honeymoon. They hope it marks a step toward reconciliation with their children’s interests cited as guiding the move.
Washington reports a broad federal prohibition overhaul favored by the administration. Bills to create a new independent prohibition bureau in the treasury and to place most enforcement officials under civil service rules were introduced. Secretary Mellon is expected to propose Volstead act changes to separate major from minor violations as Congress debates the issue.
Washington dispatch reports the Senate rejected a plan to compel action on the anthracite strike. Senator Robinson's proposal for a federal board of industrial adjustments was debated and sent to the education committee as the White House urged miners and operators to meet to resolve the dispute.
Austin report cites unnamed source close to James E. Ferguson indicating Governor Miriam A. Ferguson will run for reelection. The former governor has not confirmed or denied the statement.
Amherst Massachusetts February 6 1935 AP reports Massachusetts Agricultural College female students vote 83 to 12 against permitting smoking by co-eds on campus establishing a campus policy.
Margaret Allen, president of the National Stage Women's Exchange, praised Henry Ford as a superb dancer after dancing with him in Detroit. She described him as grace itself and noted he frowns on the Charleston while adeptly handling older dances and outdancing younger opponents.
In San Diego on Feb 6 police say Thomas M Peteet killed his wife and one daughter and seriously injured another by sealing the kitchen with gas after forcing the family to lie down. An automatic pistol was found near Peteet and investigations indicate he acted amid grief over alleged mistreatment. The Peteets were reportedly from Missouri and held a Mount Washington Missouri license.
Hans Fuhrmann once aided by prohibition agents was found dead in a New York hotel room on January 28. He had identified 14 ring members for agents and claimed two head bounties. District Attorney Buckner said Fuhrmann’s death deprives prosecutors of their key witness against the Dwyer syndicate.
James Lanyon auto truck driver suffered a broken rib when his Buick carrying five passengers struck a telephone pole at Eleventh Avenue and Davis Street. A woman was cut on the face another on the scalp as the car was badly damaged. Lanyon had previously driven the Woods case at the State fair grounds. Doctors dressed injuries and said all would soon be discharged.
New York civic reformer Alpheus Ger proposed 100 000 silver lapel buttons signaling membership in the Stillman society to gain protection from gangsters. The plan targets underworld violence by garnering sympathy from would be assailants at a Citizens Crime conference.
Weather outlook for the coming week in Tennessee notes above normal temperatures most days with fair conditions in the east and occasional rain west of the divide. Colder spell expected later in the week as a northern border system influences the region.
In Rome on February 6 Premier Mussolini addressed the chamber of deputies delivering the government’s reply to the German backed anti Italian campaign in the upper Adige. He called Germany a dangerous friend and said Italy would speak plainly to defend civilization. He described the German effort as nefarious and dying and warned of paying a high price for their aggression. He blamed German ignorance of Italy’s virile national character for the conflict and urged understanding of his blunt stance.
Huston Ray a 22 year old Los Angeles musician says music can soothe nerves and cure nervous disorders, calling music a future cure for illness. In separate dash a Los Angeles feud sees C H Griffin sue Ben Wr ingardt over 318 in a hotel rooming house deal, claiming a shortfall from a 200000 transaction.
Senators Walsh and Wheeler urged Secretary Jardine to devise a plan grading Montana wheat by protein content and to curb alleged Pacific coast deception that hurts Montana millers. Walsh said Jardine is interested and will consider both issues, while Montana growers claim higher protein deserves full credit in grading.
Burlington railroad will halt its C tours in Helena each Wednesday from June 23 to September 8, bringing thousands of tourists to visit the Gate of the Mountains. The Helena Commercial Club secured stop-over privileges, enabling visitors to enjoy scenic beauty and historic interest. Governor Sam Stewart, president of the Commercial Club, named a committee including John M. Power, Earl Ja Murphy and Charles H. Brayto.
Gold medals were given by order of King George to brave officers and sailors of the U S liner President Roosevelt as it departed Southampton for New York. Captain Fried saluted from the bridge while British and American guests watched the ceremony in the Roosevelt’s dining room.
Judge William Atwell announced the suspension of the lodge charter at St. Louis from February 1 to 26 due to indiscretion by members violating the Volstead act. The action was reported from Dallas by press services.
Dr R Hathaway former superintendent of the state hospital at Warm Springs had a new trial denied in district court today in the damage suit brought by Mrs Gina Kelly of Forsyth. Kelly won $8 000 for wrongful confinement without warrant and for an operation performed against her will. A prior trial awarded $27 500 but that verdict was set aside as excessive.
Emma Frances Dawson 73 poetess and writer died at Palo Alto hospital after being found unconscious at her cabin suffering from under nourishment and exposure. She moved from Massachusetts to California and had lived in Palo Alto for 20 years.
A 23 year old princess of an ancient Russian family was found murdered in the snow outside a Moscow pathhouse on a principal street. Police identify a janitor from a neighboring house as the suspect as the investigation continues.
New York February 6. Andrew W Mellon secretary of the treasury told a Lotos Club dinner that the futility of surtaxes is widely recognized and Congress seems ready to reduce them beyond even his initial figures. He called the tax example of the broader difficulties in handling public business.
A Sedalia Missouri clipping claims W A Clark late Montana senator taught in Priceville Missouri before fame. Major Beck reputedly lent him money for fare and board. Clark later repaid with interest, a story recounted by Sedalia Bazoo and linked by Mrs George McKown. The piece ties Clark to Priceville and to local memory of his teaching days.
Railnore police said Ralph Coursey, 33, a street car conductor, was arrested after beating his son Eldridge to death. The child died at 6 p.m.Neighbors gathered outside the Coursey home as officers intervened to prevent further violence.
Seattle reports Georges Ferdinand Louis Andre Gatineau great grandson of Clemenceau the Tiger of pain is to be deported as an unlawful entrant. Immigration guards seized him and he is held for removal to France. Gatineau entered at New Orleans May 9 1924 from Guatemala as a visitor for two weeks and had applied for first papers toward American citizenship.
In Sioux City Iowa on February 6 an AP report states 76 year old George Solomon was charged with first degree murder after his wife was found burned to death in their basement on Wednesday. Solomon says the death was accidental and he was arrested after sons reported circumstances they dispute the theory of self harm. The woman’s body was found burned severely in the furnace area.
