In Belfast on Feb 6 Irish republican leader Eamon de Valera was arrested for crossing the Ulster border in violation of a seven year old order. He was jailed in Belfast to face court, escorted by armed guards after a Dublin Belfast border incident at Goragh Wood.
In 1918 state banks were taxed under Chapter 31 of 1915 law, with capital stock assessed to stockholders after real estate was taxed directly. The Montana Supreme Court ruled this unconstitutional, leading Lewis and Clark county to refund about $30,000 plus eight percent interest to four banks. The case prompted legislative moves to tax moneyed capital instead of capital stock, with later decisions upholding deductions for non taxable securities, reducing taxes on state banks. Notice of intention of five measures to correct laws governing automobile licenses and a ninth bill for licensing drivers was given in the senate. McCormick proposes county treasurers handle re registrations and plate issuance, while original licenses stay with the registrar at Deer Lodge. A weight based fee schedule would replace horsepower, with cars under 2500 pounds at 7.50 and 40 cents per hundred pounds over. Washington reports the Senate approved a Navy bill by 68 to 12 authorizing 16 cruisers and an aircraft carrier with ships to be laid down by July 1, 1930. The measure mirrors a House version and moves to President Coolidge for signature after House-Senate amendments. Budget implications include a $274 million total appropriation with $17 million per cruiser and $19 million for the carrier.
Miss Dalle Kirkpatrick of Richard City Tennessee killed herself at home over lacking funds for a trous seal. Her father Dr J A Kirkpatrick said she planned to marry a Kansas City man and asked for money but received insufficient funds before shooting herself.
Anaconda February 5 AP John Cantrell age 24 of Anaconda was killed on the Butte Anaconda road last night. Eric Carlson reported seeing a man in the road and the pair investigated finding Cantrell dead. John Justine claimed to have struck something and returned. Ettore Scataclini was later detained after driving over the body.
Aboard the U S S Mallard off Key West Florida two sailors escaping a sunken submarine S 4 in forty feet of water used oxygen inflated masks to reach the surface through an escape hatch then returned to the sub and escaped again from the motor room tests aimed at proving safety devices to save officers and crew during war time undersea accidents continued near Smith Shoals 11 miles off Key West with further hopes of safer procedures.
Bozeman February 5. The Yellowstone Trail between Logan and Three Forks is closed to traffic due to Madison River overflow from an ice jam. W A Culp of the state highway commission notes water blocked by a 15 mile Ure dike in Gallatin county causing culverts to freeze and push water across the highway for about three quarters of a mile.

Paris February 5 AP reports a third congestion spot appeared in the lungs of Marshal Ferdinand Foch. Despite this new issue his condition remains serious amid a restless mood following an indigestion attack.
Ti Nelson, 26, a bridge worker, fell 45 feet onto rocks from a bridge in Muskogee Oklahoma. He landed on his head and, after calmly waiting for an ambulance, was treated for a split nose and several broken teeth.

Berlin broadcasts report that Darom Ehrenfried Gunther von Huenefeld, one of the three crew of the Bremen which first crossed the North Atlantic westward without a stop, died after an operation in a Berlin sanitarium. Born in Koenigsberg, he was the son of a Prussian army officer and had a frail health. He sought wartime service, was initially rejected, later served as a motorcycle dispatch rider and was wounded by shrapnel in both legs in Flanders with a marine division.
Mrs Tackaye Barnett, described as a pale faced wife of a Creek Indian heir, again refuses to testify under immunity before a Senate committee. Her attorney says she will testify only without oath, as hearing concerns a marriage described as kidnapping and the transfer of more than 5 000 900 dollars between churches and a missionary society.
Capt Frank Hawks piloting a Lockheed monoplane with Oscar Geuble set a new West East nonstop flight record from Los Angeles to Roosevelt Field New York in 18 hours 31 minutes 83 seconds despite snow fog and rain. Atlanta February 5 AP Clin ton S Carnes once ear convict and treasurer of the Southern Baptist Home Mission board pleaded guilty to embezzlement here and was sentenced to seven years imprisonment. He must make restitution after officials recommended leniency to save state costs and reflect his age.
Minot North Dakota February 3 AP Robert Bl Stafford 8 former Indian fighter with Custer and a veteran of the Washita river battle died at home of a daughter. Stafford claimed personal friendship with Custer.
The Public Health Service reports a 50 percent drop in influenza cases across eight states plus DC and New York City for the week ending Feb 2 compared with the prior week. Surgeon General Merritte W. Tepperland warns against complacency, saying statistics may not reflect the epidemic’s true scope.
