Washington, Jan. 31. Congress debates remonetizing silver as key to better times. The House Banking Committee, chaired by Mah Lamere, approves hearings starting tomorrow to weigh silver certificates and legal tender status. Hearings will stretch five to ten days with potential longer study, and a committee report may adjust the timeline.
The state legislature approved selling $2,000,000 in bonds to wipe out the current state debt. The measure, passed by a 49 to 11 vote, received prior endorsement from the governor and senate last Friday.
Montana Senate discussed S. A. No. 82 to trim pay for state officials and workers, proposing a $1500 deduction from Supreme Court justices’ salaries while current pay stands at 7500 yearly. The measure claims save about 357000 annually. The session also advanced bids rules for county purchases and salary controls for deputies and assistants.
Blankenbaker and Moss will sponsor a measure to sharply reduce House membership. The house convenes this morning at 9 18 with think reading planned. Among bills on general orders is a $700 000 appropriation to university units. A penalty committees hearing heard John J Frey secretary treasurer of the metal workers department of the American Moderation of Labor with the charge that Morgan Bank and Chase National Bank through a pyram id of interlocking directorates hold virtually complete domination of the country's industry and indor.
A young woman, removed from a San Francisco hotel, was detained for treatment of chronic alcoholism. She used the alias Carling Palmer when registered, and police had been alerted after a letter of introduction was shown by hotel staff. A physician advised hospitalization and she was admitted to the detention hospital.
Washington January 31 The drive to require six hour workdays five days a week stalled as House leaders doubt passage. Labor committee chair Connery plans to push ahead despite constitutional concerns and veto risks. The bill would punish violations with fines up to $1 000 or four months imprisonment or both for those transporting goods made beyond the limit in interstate or foreign commerce.

Washington reports that FTC investigators exposed a large Insull utility empire financial manipulation. Carl M. Dipve testified that Utility Investments listed assets at 257,892,050 while market value was under 90,402,000 and unpaid loans of 41,585,000 largely covered by demand loans. Loans were made to Samuel and Martin Insull and other affiliates and later written off.
Managua report says a detachment of the national guard confronted a Sandinista group near Hateli late yesterday. In a short exchange four rebels were killed and an undetermined number wounded. No guardsmen were harmed.
Democratic leaders push emergency legislation to aid farm mortgagors in a session marked by hearings on a moratorium on Federal Land Bank loan repayments. The push includes price support measures. flour millers oppose, warning bread could rise by a cent and a half a loaf.
Buenos Aires January 21 A farmers strike backed by the Argentine Agrarian federation with about 85 000 members is to start tomorrow under government action. They seek relief including standard rents lower interest to five percent a moratorium on debt tax roll reductions immediate clear titles to colonists on government lands and a fixed corn price or government storage to raise prices. The corn price was set at 22.6 cents a bushel.
Students and political leaders planned a demonstration for tomorrow over a hospital bombing in Asuncion that reportedly killed seven patients. The war minister said 20 bombs were dropped in the attack, which occurred yesterday at Inland St. Paul. The Federal Intermediate Credit Bank of St. Paul cut its discount rate from 4% to 3% effective tomorrow.
W. W Brooks of Molywand, a treasure hunter, died of heart failure while walking to the O'Briett ranch near Liver City. Inquest witnesses and officials warned his death could spark a fresh gold rush in Grant County as searches for two tons of gold, silver, copper ingots, Mexican coins, and jewels buried by outlaws years ago intensify. Brooks had hunted the Davis mountain treasure for eight years and hinted at its buried location, though locals could not confirm details.

Jacksonville Florida January 21 A verdict of not guilty was directed by Criminal Court Judge J M Peeler in seven flogger trials linked to the recent whipping in the city. The judge said the state had failed to present sufficient evidence to convict.

In Relfant Ireland on January 31 irregular violence and interference halted train operations on the first day of a railway strike. Five thousand workers quit at midnight leaving only light forces to run service. A train from Greenore to Dundalk faced a disruption as attackers boarded the engine, poured water on the fire, and removed the engineer and fireman while being towed back. Washington on December 31 reports the Reconstruction Finance Corporation approved loans totaling 6.1 million for New York and 1.0 million for Montana, with additional sums for Dayton Toledo Ohio and Montana counties. Montana has received 1.12 million so far of a 45.0 million allotment, with disbursement planned in January and February.
