Federal agents arrest alleged Butte drug sellers

Federal Narcotic Officers Hildebrand Straw and Hoffman rounded up five suspected narcotics traffickers in Butte, charging them with federal offenses. The operation targeted a West Mercury street operation run by Toy Sing and Chin Guey, aided by Robert Martin, Newton Schultz, and Frances Steele. Evidence showed Sing and Guey operated a cocaine shop with little to no drugs seized at raid, while Schultz, Steele, and Martin faced drug sale charges. Officers noted a improving city scene, with about 100 addicts remaining, as runners—often Chinese or Japanese—smuggle drugs from abroad in quantities around 150 ounces per shipment, then retail into hypodermic and tablet forms.
