A playful 1925 NEA column notes on aging, vacations, canaries, weeds, cake jokes, August heat, strawberries, winter coming, licenses, oysters, moths, fashion, crowd life, Christmas ordering, and wry lines about wives and work. It reflects light social humor and dated quips from Tom Sims.
The smallest plat is half as wide as it is long. If two yards are added to each side, the area grows by 196 square yards. Let length be L and width W with W = L/2. Then area is A = L*W = L^2/2. After expansion by 2 yards on each side, new dimensions are (L+4) by (W+4), area = (L+4)(W+4) = (L+4)(L/2+4) = 196 more than A. Solve: (L+4)(L/2+4) = L^2/2 + 196. This yields L^2/2 + 6L + 16 = L^2/2 + 196, so 6L = 180, L = 30. Then W = 15. The plat size is 30 by 15 yards.
