Fire on Kootenai described as regular inferno by ranger
Missoula August 8 The Seventeen Mile fire in the Kootenai forest ranked as the district’s largest in six years and the hottest seen by veteran foresters. Glenn Smith assistant district forester said the blaze stretched nine miles by six and burned over 12000 acres in ten days. The fire, fanned by high winds, destroyed several thousand acres of timber, including half a Neils Lumber Co. tract. Smith and crews faced extreme heat driving back repeatedly from the front as they labeled a camp site burned within hours of arrival. Risk was amplified by fishermen smoking in inaccessible burns.
