Rome April 19 Representatives of four European powers Italy Germany Hungary and Poland met in round robin talks to discuss Rome Berlin axis policies and counter a perceived encirclement by France and Britain. Meantime Washington April 19 President Roosevelt urged Democrats who disagree with current policy to join a party that reflects their views or leave, warning that conservatives risk losing power.

In Catnmbur Ohio on April 14 three partners in crime father son and friend were executed for the 1937 Springfield killings. They faced charges including murder of Patrolman Marie Randolph and Deputy Sheriff Edward Furry after a gun battle and robbery. One associate Robert Cornette died in the fight. Harry Chapman Henry Dingledine and Harry Dingledine were executed in the death chair amid protests.
In New York on April 19 the United Mine Workers threaten a total shutdown of Appalachian coal mines unless operators accept a new contract. UMW officials confirm orders to terminate the special working agreements affecting about 160000 miners across 14 districts amid a coal shortage. The move follows a two year contract expiration with widespread idle crews and mass cancellations expected in several states.
