Lewis and Clark county plans a large citizenship class and public reception for youths reaching voting age in 1941. Sponsored by the Montana Bar Association, Citizenship Day will be observed in the third week of May on a date set by district judges. The legislature recently recognized the week as Citizenship Week to honor Montana residents.
British sources say Salonika value is not crucial to the Balkan campaign as Imperial forces brace for a stand behind the Vardar river. They warn Skopje and Shkoder gains could alter Yugoslav resistance and note Yugoslav air defenses were weak and unprepared for German bombing.
West Midlands town hit by two overnight air raids, German Luftwaffe causing heavy damage and casualties. First raid repelled by night fighters after AA guns quieted to give attackers room. later, a renewed, intense strike targeted the town. In New York, war nerves drive declines as bonds and stocks slip amid broader anxieties from Yugoslav troop withdrawals and shifting European fronts.
German and Yugoslav reports detail Nazi advances toward Skoplje in the Vardar valley while Belgrade suffers heavy aerial damage. Berlin says troops moved from Bulgaria toward Skoplje, threatening Greek positions as mechanized units push southward.
Hugh Adair of Helena was selected yesterday to be the main speaker at the annual Montana sportsmen’s banquet at the Montana hotel in Anaconda. The event drew about forty yearround attendees from Anaconda and nearby cities, with strong Greek heroism cited in the defense of Fort Ustaite where tanks and air bombing were repelled. Tom Majee and Nick Dondelinger, both local officials, announced details as prominent Anaconda figures highlighted the occasion. An elk dinner will follow the speeches, presided over by Mr. Males, with sportsmen from a dozen cities expected to attend.
Rome reports a swift Axis advance into north Africa beyond Derna as Tobruk is seen as threatened. British forces faced a longer capture of Derna after Tobruk, while Italian German units reportedly pushed 140 miles beyond Bengasi toward Egypt.
World War II dispatches report German forces capture Kemetine in Grecian Thrace while Greek troops pull back toward the Turkish border. In Washington, President Roosevelt says defense cash disbursements reached 1.8 billion dollars in the first quarter of 1941, noting slow progress and room for improvement despite increased spending.
Mexico City April decree expropriates 10 Italian and 2 German merchant ships seized by the Mexican navy at Tampico and Vera Cruz. Crews are to be placed aboard immediately to resume coastwise and international trade. Claims against expropriation deferred until end of the European war.
London reports the Luftwaffe bombers staged the heaviest Allied air raid of the war. British planes dropped hundreds of tons of high explosives and over 30 000 incendiaries on Kiel overnight, striking shipyards and submarine facilities. The blast left warehouses aflame and buildings destroyed, with significant damage to the Deutsche Werke yards and surrounding town.
A naval patrol bomber plunged into the sea off Great Machipongo inlet. A destroyer towed the sea bottom for hours and brought a crew member’s body into port. Two officers and eight enlisted men were aboard. one body identified later. Wreckage and life-saving gear were recovered before arrival.
Governors of Montana Wyoming and Idaho invited as guests of the Tri State Yellowstone Park Civilian association at Old Faithful for the playground opening celebration on May 11. The association will hold its annual meeting on May 15 at Old Faithful.
Yugoslav troops hit Bulgarian frontier posts near Sofia with strong force as Premier Bogdan Philoff reported. British and Ashen radio sources claimed small German units attacked Salonika, a major Greek port. CBS reported 40 000 to 60 000 British troops moved into northern Greece facing the German assault. Greece reports loss of communications between Eastern Macedonia and Vardar valley routes while fighting on Struma heights recaptures Daytavil and more Nazi paratroopers. President Roosevelt sent a message of cheer to King Peter II of Yugoslavia pledging renewed aid and praising Yugoslav resistance to the German invasion. He called the invasion unprovoked and ruthless and promised to speed material assistance as communications remain disrupted in the Balkans. For the first time since the attack the State Department heard from Arthur Bliss Lane, the American minister in Yugoslavia.
In a historic session Ford Motor Company officials met with leaders of the United Automobile Workers represented by Philip Murray. The River Rouge strike had closed the plant for a week and Governor Van Wagoner urged talks while Roosevelt prepared to meet Murray. The governor said the new developments were not encouraging to any party and asked Roosevelt to delay defense mediation.
