Officials said vengeance or a hunt for an important document may explain the mysterious butchery. They linked Eugene A. Chenevert to a California-era brawl in which a man was killed, triggering a relative’s vow of revenge. Stockton police later said Bert Vincent, used as Chenevert’s alias, was convicted there on an assault charge.
Shanghai reports two thousand Chinese bandits led by Liu Kweitang scaled the walls of Kingyu near Shanghai, looted and burned the town, and mercilessly ravaged its people before torching it. General Lin, famed bandit leader, was said to be routed March 26 by General Han Fu-Chu, with bandits escaping to Shantung and northern Toangsit provinces.
In a district court case, A P Bruce’s claim to the office of commissioner of agriculture was found legally insufficient. Judge W Y H Poorman sustained AL W Stafford’s demurrer to Bruce’s answer and cross complaint in quo warranto proceedings, indicating Bruce is not entitled to the office under his pleadings. Stafford must file an affirmative answer to prove his right, with Bruce to plead further or await judgment and possible appeal to the supreme court.

A rival proposal by Senator LaFollette would raise normal income tax to six percent and surtaxes from six to 71 percent. The committee rates were kept with 47 votes to maintain the tentative schedule, resolving the bucket controversy.
