In Skopje crowds fill the streets while soldiers hurry to positions along the Vardar valley. Civilians are barred from the streets after 3 p m as the town endures its first full blackout. Turkish descended troops arrive astride donkeys led by suited women.
Mexico City reports a foreign office source stating Mexico has nearly decided to expropriate 12 Axis ships now held in Mexican custody at Tampico and Vera Cruz. It would cancel debts for prewar petroleum shipments totaling about 12 million dollars, with Italy and Germany to settle shares. Crews of about 600 would be interned for the war’s duration as gunboat Durango reinforces Marines at Veracruz.
New York April 3 Citing a flag long conference coal miners and operators pressed for a settlement to end the Appalachian 400 000 soft coal miners work stoppage. Jairo April 4 AP British general headquarters announced the army of the Nile withdrew from Bengasi Libyan seaport after destroying stores and equipment. They said the move aimed to wait on defensible ground while inflicting considerable casualties on Italian German forces. Despite the withdrawal optimism grew for an early finish to the east African campaign with Addis Ababa in sight.
Senator George said after a Doughton led meeting that Congress will likely raise 1.5 billion dollars in new taxes within the current structure. He expects rate increases for individual and corporate incomes, including the excess profits category, retroactive to this year. Congressional study could begin late April with new legislation possible late May or early June.
In Cristobal Panama Canal Zone on April 3, U S authorities announced swift action on a coal extension bill. Three Italian officers from the Conte Blancha and five staff members of an Italian steamship agency were arrested or held, with the Italian consul Giovanni Bruni among those involved in the arrest or inquiries. The board ordered the revote after testimony by handwriting experts and admitted fraudulent ballots in the January 21 vote. The court rejected the union’s request for an injunction.
