Bazaar Kansas March 31 AP Knute Rockne Notre Dame football coach perished in a Transcontinental and Western airliner crash in mid Kansas. Eight aboard including five passengers and two pilots died instantly when the aircraft hit a farm in fog and clouds. The famous coach was identified by WL White son of William allen White editor. The plane was en route California from Kansas City.
Oregon and Washington face severe floods with highways washed out and towns marooned. High water and landslides disrupt travel as creeks and rivers swell, including the Sandy near Brightwood and Arrawannay. Mount Hood snowmelt feeds raging torrents. the Neewh river area sees rising floods and possible evacuations.
The state board of examiners selected Avelitoris for buildings at five state institutions and awarded George H. Carsley of Trelaena the tuberculosis sanitarium project in Galen with a $140,000 bond funded budget. DeKay of this city joins as partner in the project along with A VeKay and Son. Remodeling and new construction follow voter approval of the $2,000,000 bond referendum.
Montpelier March 34 14 percent Warton TR. Austin of Burlington, Republican, apparently elected United States senator today over Stephen M. Triscoll of St. Albans, Democrat, to fill the late Senator Frank Lt. Green seat. Anticipated January but prohibition not a factor in Triscoll’s campaign.
Dita Tanvlon, longtime private secretary to Queen Victoria and secretary to the royal ally, died today at Stanfordhan. Born to a country vicar, he served for 40 years and was said to have possessed more intimate royal secrets than any other man. He died at home in Wislyate.
In a chaotic courtroom scene, the defense rested after presenting a day of testimony from witnesses near Randolph Street pedestrian tunnel who placed the defendant at the scene. Prosecutors identified a man who threw a weapon near Lingle’s body and a fleeing witness, while several suspects, including seven persons called today, described the defendant as involved, with some witnesses asserting positive identification of Brother.
A garbled note recalls a prophecy about a fatal plane strike linked to Notre Dame figures. It mentions Kate, Athan, Heath, and Rockne, and a flight between Atlanta and Minneapolis. The report notes a foretelling remark about danger at a future time and place.

Julius Curtius German foreign minister told the reichstrat Germany would not oppose submitting the Austro German customs record to the League of Nations for examination though no reason exists to do so. He stressed no intent to affect extraneous treaties or Austrian independence. Diplomatic talks in Paris and London considered delaying the accord, with plans to press Germany and Austria for further negotiations after the League Council meets in May or to enlarge the council’s power to review the agreement as a general policy?
In Nica France on March 31 Charlie Chaplin was named understudy for the French president and scheduled to appear as part of the Doumorgue program. Police and dignitaries welcomed Chaplin, staging a rehearsal amid tensions over attire and public order.
At least 50 prisoners were killed and about as many injured when a powerful earthquake razed the national penitentiary at Managuas. The quake struck for about two minutes, hindering escape efforts and raising casualty estimates as walls collapsed and debris trapped inmates. American victims were reported among the dead and missing officials noted.
Obituary notice reports the death of Milkyn Arbuckle of stage fame in Ogdensburg New York on March 24. The late actor, known for his long career on the stage, reportedly passed away tonight at PWaddington St. Tantrenee County hospital after prolonged overwork and decline in health.
Destructive quake and fires in Managua, Nicaragua, killed an estimated 1,000 people and injured thousands, with American and British legations and government buildings destroyed. Fire swept 20 blocks of the business district, causing about 30 million dollars in property damage as U.S. marines took charge and martial law was declared.
Swift couriers carried the United States relief to Managua Nicaragua as the monic government responded to dispatches carrying medical supplies and relief workers. President Hoover ordered war and mired departments and agencies into action within minutes, with a navy mission to Lt. Commander 7 continuing on.
A sequence of tornadic hail storms swept the South causing multiple deaths and heavy crop losses. In Georgia the hail belt suffered significant damage while a tornado destroyed a home in Alabama killing a young girl. An artillery unit moving from Fort Bragg to Fort Benning reported a fatal injury near Tablom Ga. Continued on page 6.
Roosevelt Field New York reports the Union aviators who flew into the North Atlantic to find missing Viking sealer crew. Captain Morlan Cooper, Randy Hanlow, and Tern Balchen returned to Basewell Field this afternoon, saying survivors were highly unlikely after the harsh voyage from Newfoundland.
In Utriwa Ontario on April 1 firemen battled a two hour blaze in the city hall. Four firefighters were trapped and later released at 1 30 pm and sent to hospital conscious but badly burned. Earlier four other men were rescued with minor injuries.
A severe blizzard devastated duck flocks across the Thoeky Mountain region and eastern Chetenne areas. Tens of thousands of ducks froze or starved as storms forced them down and left fields and farms covered in snow. Local reporters from Colorado Springs documented the tragedy as weather worsened in Colorado and nearby states.
A steam pipe burst beneath a sidewalk at Broadway and 46th Street in Times Square, sending debris into the air and blocking the square. Fire crews faced delays locating the shutoff while steam and water flooded the area and cooled into the subway. No injuries are reported.
Los Angeles reports a divorce trial over Luther Reed, film director, and wife Doselyn Lestin. Witness I J Mull, a Mexican resort house detective, testified Reed was naked and bloodied, and Doselyn accused him with an ashtray clash. Bert Wheeler corroborated Reed’s reputation and party ties to Agua Caliente.
William Crathe Sr., assistant secretary for Western European affairs, was named under secretary of state by President Hoover after the death of Joseph Potter Cotton of New York. Crathe, aged 68, resides in Washington.
A fiery collapse in Managua, Nicaragua, killed an estimated 1,000 people and injured thousands. Americans were among the dead or missing as flames swept 28 blocks, destroying central buildings including the American and British legations. Marines then took control and began relief efforts.
Washington reports discuss possible withdrawal of American forces from Nicaragua after an earthquake disaster. Talks between Secretary Stinson and President Moncada targeted timing and political impact, with plans for a staged pullout around 1932 elections. Washington reports from March 1 state department says the American charge d'affaires at Manila Willard I. Bautae informed that the city suffered near destruction from the quake while the American legation staff remained safe.
