Train wreck near Maxon station kills and burns many
A broken rail caused a violent wreck on the Southern Pacific near Maxon station, 25 miles west of Sanderson, at 3 a.m. Fifteen killed and 28 injured, many cremated as cars piled and caught fire. Relief trains and surgeons from El Paso and Del Rio rushed aid to the injured passengers and crew aboard the Galveston Harrisburg and San Antonio westbound No. 9.

The American steamer Waesland bound for Philadelphia from Liverpool collided with the British ship Harmonides off Holyhead. Waesland sank. Harmonides rescued passengers and crew and is bringing them to Liverpool. Tugs were dispatched from Liverpool to meet the Harmonides.

Farrell freed amid age discrepancy in South Dakota murder case

Mrs Mary Linhoff was yesterday sentenced to two years imprisonment for fatally shooting Edward Bromley on August 30 1901. The shooting arose from a quarrel between the Bromleys and the Linhoffs. Linhoff claimed she shot to save her husband’s life.

Man Acquitted of Assault Charge in LeMars Trial
In LeMars Indiana on March 8 August Schwandt was acquitted of assaulting the daughter of Henry Detkin after a two day district court trial. The defendant claimed the child fell and injured herself and medical testimony supported this. Schwandt wept for joy when the verdict was read.

Damages for Horse's Kick in LeMars District Court
In LeMars Iowa on March 8, district court awarded H B Vedder 500 dollars in damages after Vedder sued his employer John Delaney for 5000 dollars for injuries from a horse kick. Vedder says he was feeding horses in a double stall when Delaney struck a horse causing it to rear and plunge, kicking and trampling Vedder.

Returns to Stand Trial in Whittmore Embezzlement Case
Des Moines March 9. Kossuth county grand jury has held F. B. Thompson, late manager of the Farmers' Exchange association of Whitte more, on embezzlement charges and he has given bonds of 1000 dollars to await trial. The panel did not review all records but indicates a shortage of about 2500 with more to follow, estimates put total shortage between 8000 and 13000. Thompson says he is not guilty and returned from the north before the indictment was issued.

Iowa miners debated the mine run scale and shot firer requirements yesterday in Des Moines. A joint conference with operators is set for March. They voted to establish permanent head offices at Albia or Oskaloosa and to pay officers salaries. Mrs Alvah Hollingsworth 42 died after attempting to jump from a wagon drawn by a runaway team near Rose Hill. Her neck was broken and she suffered severe injuries as the vehicle dragged her for about twenty rods. Two daughters and a niece escaped injury. she leaves a husband two sons and two daughters.
