Hillcrest Colliery Disaster Leaves Town in Mourning

June 19 Hillcrest Alti. Canada reports a catastrophic mining explosion at Hillcrest Colliery. About 200 workers perished or were missing, with 41 survivors from a 263 man shift. Rescue crews recovered corpses, while families gathered at the mine washhouse in a city-wide vigil. The blast cratered the engine house, scattered debris, and coal dust blanketed the area as authorities feared further victims.

Builders order massive steel rails for British Columbia lines

Vancouver June 17 Porty five thousand tons of steel rails have been ordered by the Connellian Northern Railway for the completion of its lines in British Columbia. Fifteen thousand tons will go to Port Mann etc. The company has 8,000 tons to be shipped to Vancouver Island and 17,000 tons to the Yellowhead Pass. Work to lay rails from several points aims to finish by October.

The Census and Statistics Office issues a preliminary Canada grain crop estimate on June 1. Areas sown and crop conditions are given for Wheat, Oats, Barley, Rye, and Hay across provinces.
