Kettle Valley Railway Progress Hints at Delays

The Kettle Valley Railway fencing and telegraph line work at Merritt is advancing with steel tiles pending. Macdonell Growski & Co expect to restart the first ten tiles this spring while grading continues on the 20 miles of the remaining 30 contract. Rumor of a second 30 miles contract south of Merritt is denied and unlikely before July.

What 1 50 Will Do The China Famine Relief Committee

The China famine relief committee reports severe conditions in famine stricken China. Endorsed by Earl Grey, J. M. Gibson, Sir James Whitne y and other eastern leaders. The Chinese consul general cites indescribable suffering and millions at risk without relief. Bishop White of Honan appeals to Canada for aid. One dollar and fifty cents could save a life. Government land price increase in British Columbia

The Lieutenant-Governor has signed an order raising second-class crown land prices from 2.50 to 5 per acre and first-class from 5 to 10 per acre. Crown land surveying fees double to 0.50 per acre, and a broad reserve is placed on alienation except by pre-emption. The minister of lands will push systematic surveying and may adopt a site-by-auction system.
