Seven Traffic Accidents During Long Weekend

Robertson county saw seven traffic crashes from Sept 23 to 26 investigated by DPS highway patrolmen Gary Henderson and Haske Lunsford. Five people were injured, none severely. Incidents included a 1972 Ford rollover near Calvert, a car fire south of Rosser, a Buick engine fire, two-car collisions near Franklin, and crashes near Calvert and Easterly with multiple minor injuries and licensure or roadway violations cited.

Room To Grow Is Theme Of 4-H Week

National 4 H Week runs October 3 to 9 with the theme Room To Grow. 4 H enrollments rise 7.8 percent to about 5.6 million youths ages nine to nineteen nationwide, with Texas listing around 120 000 participants across counties. Programs emphasize practical skills leadership and citizenship as extension districts plan activities to attract new members and deepen involvement.

Retired Teachers Meet September 13

Thomas Kelly Named Bank Vice President at Planters and Merchants

Planters and Merchants State Bank directors voted Tuesday to hire Thomas G. Kelly of Petersburg as vice president effective October 15. Kelly, 63, native of Lott, has 28 years with First State Bank of Petersburg and led as president for 14 years. He is a former president of the South Plains Bankers Association. He and wife LaVerne have two sons. Kelly is a Baptist and deacon in Petersburg. He will bring extensive banking experience to the Planters and Merchants team.

McCain Retiring From Planters and Merchants Bank

Jack McCain announces retirement as vice president of Planters and Merchants State Bank effective October 31. Associated with the bank since April 1969, he is a former president of First State Bank of Bremond and Normangee State Bank. He will devote time to his Bremond insurance company and to livestock raising after retirement.

Plan Vaccine County Program Tuesday Night

An organizational meeting in Hearne at Fireman's Hall set plans for Robertson County swine flu vaccination efforts. County medical officer Dr. Ron Huddleston and Texas Health Resources reps attended. no local vaccine date was announced. Chairmen were named Mrs. Ben L Parten Jr and Mrs. Jack Lyons. volunteers, especially nurses, are sought through area contacts.

County Teachers First Meeting in Robertson County

The Robertson County chapter of the Texas State Teachers Association and National Education Agency held its first general meeting of the school year on September 21 at Hearne Junior High School auditorium. President Mrs. Lillian Sadberry introduced officers and faculty representatives, then John Hall of Austin spoke on active membership benefits and the goal of 165,600 members, noting involvement through legislative action before the Texas Legislature.

Trail Ride Planned Sunday From Hearne to Barrville Ranch

A trail ride is planned for Sunday October 3. Riders depart Norwood Lane Hearne at 8 a m for Barrville Ranch between Franklin and Calvert, with noon refreshments and a saddle prize at 1 p m after a name drawing. Riders return to Hearne. contact Riley King or Jim Barr for details.

Council Studies Request For 100 Housing Units

The Hearne city council agreed to decide within 60 days whether to negotiate with the Hearne Housing Authority for a cooperative agreement to sponsor construction of 100 additional low income housing units. Alderman Baylor Carrington abstained. four aldermen voted for resolutions outlining the city’s intent. The plan would require utility street and sewer services to residents of the proposed units.

Highway edge line striping to begin in District 17

Texas Highway Department official District Engineer Joe G Hanover announced thermoplastic edge line striping along 129 miles in District 17. White lines near shoulders on two lane roads and yellow lines on four lane sections will mark Highways 6 36 and 79 plus loops around Bryan College Station Navasota and related areas with flagmen signs and barriers to protect motorists during the work. Hearne Hires New Officer Collier joins Hearne Police

Farris Newton Collier began work September 10 as a patrolman with the Hearne Police Department. A 25 year old married Nederland High School graduate from 1970, he previously patrolled Griffin Park and later served as a Nederland dispatcher, increasing Hearne officers to six under the police chief.

Hearne Eagles Host Pflugerville Panthers Friday Night

Hearne plans a Friday night football game at Wood Field against Pflugerville, first meeting since Pflugerville joined District 23AA. Both teams carry two wins and one loss as Coach Bob Davis expects a tight contest. Junior varsity at Pflugerville Thursday 7:30 p.m. followed by freshman game at 6 p.m. Seventh grade Eaglets face Rockdale at 6 p.m. and eighth grade at 7:38 p.m.

Library Club Installs Officers Monday Night Hearne High

The Hearne High School Library Club held its annual installation and induction ceremony on Monday September 20 in the school library, with Mrs. Wilbur Strong directing. New officers for 1976 77 include Judy Mushinski president Theresa Hancock vice president Stacy Meadors secretary Floyd Byrd parliamentarian Roy Buckley treasurer Toni Hunt reporter and Ceferina Leal historian. Seventy five members attended with guest photographer Steve Bishop. festivities featured candles, slides, a cake, refreshments and a punch table.
