Four Highway Crashes Studied by Texas Patrolmen
DPS highway officers Henderson and Lunsford each investigated two Robertson County crashes over September 6 to 9, with two minor injuries. Incidents include a 1967 Chevrolet leaving FM 1644 near Calvert injuring a passenger, a high speed crash near Hearne on Cronan Lane, a 1962 Volkswagen collision south of Hearne on Highway 6, and a head on near Calvert on Highway 6 with charges for unsafe speed and wrong side driving.

Hendrix Named Kentucky Colonel and Honored Leader
Hearne resident William C. Duke Hendrix receives membership in The Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels for charity work. He also gets an honorary Duke of Paducah award from Paducah's mayor and is named ambassador for the Kentucky Department of Parks. Born in Ellis County, Hendrix retired from a 38 year career with the Southern Pacific Railroad, is married to Bertha Rogers, and has a son Dr. William C. Hendrix Jr. in Fort Worth. He served in the Navy aboard the USS South Dakota in World War I and has long been active in Texas politics and veterans groups. He belongs to the Democratic Party and has ties to the Brotherhood Legislative Board, the Texas Centennial Commission, and the Masonic Lodge.

The Hearne Police Department reports 13 persons jailed from September 7 to September 12. All were released by September 13. Charges included theft disorderly conduct probation violation public intoxication and driving while intoxicated. Nine suspects face city court and four district court appearances.

Veterans of WWI meet for September potluck luncheon
The Veterans of World War I and their auxiliary will gather at noon on Monday September 20 at the Hearne Community Center on Davis Street for a potluck luncheon. Steering Committee Holds First Meeting Hearne ISD explores community education
The Hearne Independent School District Community Education Steering Committee met at the First Baptist Church fellowship hall at 10 a.m. on September 7 to discuss the process for establishing a community education project. A film titled To Touch A Child was shown and attendees were asked to nominate two people to join a later advisory council. Attendees represented city government, chamber, sorority, teacher associations, Parent Teacher Association, Lions Club, and school staff. A second meeting tentatively set for September 16.

County Court OKs truck sale and pays monthly bills
Robertson County Commissioners Court met in regular session Monday. Action taken includes approving sale of an old county truck for Precinct Three and approving $17,982.78 for the monthly accounts payable. A $168 bid from Jack Wilkins of Franklin won a 1962 Precinct Three truck. The four precincts’ monthly payables were Precinct One 3259.47, Precinct Two 4487.32, Precinct Three 4408.47, Precinct Four 5627.52.

Hearne School Board Hears Contract for North Side Classrooms
The Hearne School Board voted to enter a contract phase with Emmett Trant Jr. and Associates for planning 5506 square feet of classroom space on the high school south side. A bid phase will follow if approved. The board also authorized buying a 125 by 125 foot lot between Third Street and North Side Elementary to extend the playground for 1500 dollars from Catarina Aguirre estate. Margaret Hudson of College Station was hired to teach third grade at North Side Elementary.

Calvert Baptist Church Plans Dedication of New Building
Calvert Baptist Church will dedicate its 6,305 square foot educational building on Sunday October 10 in a day that also marks the churchs 107th anniversary. The event is a homecoming with lunch after morning worship and ongoing prayer and Bible study activities reflect the Weeks of Prayer for State Missions.

Hearne Council approves 1.6 million dollar budget
Hearne City Council unanimously approved a 1 602 136 dollar budget for the fiscal year October 1 to September 30 1977. The panel rejected a 468 72 dollar claim by Ed Slovacek of Bryan for preliminary audit expenses and set 133 000 of the budget for outstanding bonds with 1 409 136 for general operations. The council also planned a September 25 26 cleanup push and discussed flood mitigation for Lost Creek with FHA aid talks.

Hearne Volunteer Fire Department members met on September 7 to elect officers for the coming year. Horace Mathews was elected fire chief succeeding Cum mings Suggs who retires after 98 years of service. Jack Mathews became president.
