Franklin residents share news of visits and travel from Victoria, Waco, Refugio, and California. Local clergy, families, and friends report hospital stays, hospitalizations, and enrollments at Mary Hardin Baylor and Sam Houston State. The community notes reflect travels to Midland Hearne Bryan Huntsville and Atwater California.
Calvert weekly notes show Luther Fulton Grand Prairie and Gloria Jameson Austin guests with local families. Reed family from Houston. Clyde Eaton plans Michigan trip. Ray Myers guests include Elly Cone and Don Ahr as they head to Texas Tech.
Miss Linda Nash bride elect of Larry Coe of Hearne was honored with a miscellaneous shower Saturday afternoon by the Homemakers Sunday School Class at the home of Mrs. M. D. Warren on the A-Bar Ranch. Guests included the bride to be her mother Mrs. J. C. Nash Jr. and several hostesses. yellow and white flowers, white carnations corsages, and a lace covered tea table highlighted the reception room.
The Calvert schools operate on a regular schedule with a work-first culture. Enrollment has risen to 233, with about 95 students working in the lunch room. Superintendent H. S. Pearson will attend multiple meetings in September to discuss OEOA programs and district plans. The 1965-66 budget totals 277,107.78, up from 266,309.50, funded by local, county, and state sources. Calvert Future Farmers elected officers and Sweetheart and queen selections announced, along with band officers for the new year.
Mrs. F O Smith spent from Thursday until Sunday of last week visiting in Houston with her son Richard and other relatives.
Double funeral services were held Tuesday at Zion Hill Baptist Church near Jasper for Walter Hawthorne 75 and his wife Mineola Hawthorne 72. Walter died September 5 in M D Anderson Hospital Houston after a short illness. Mineola died September 6 at home while preparing to attend her husband’s service. Survivors include four sons W V Hawthorne Hearne F C Hawthorne Houston Lenox Dorr Lee Hawthorne Silsbee two daughters E A Fairchild Kirbyville and Mrs Donald Lumpkin Port Arthur and 23 grandchildren.
The Hearne Neighborhood Girl Scout leaders met September 4 in the West Side School cafetorium with Mrs. Carl Topopa presiding. Present were Mrs. Julia Hillman and Mrs. Lannes Hope, Bryan officials, and Mrs. A. L. Turner Hearne troop organizer. Five troops and about 60 girls are active. Turner will aid reorganization and recruit from second grade for Brownie troops. Next October two delegates will attend the council meeting in Waco. Regular meetings are the first full week of each month at 8:30 a.m. at East Side School cafetorium. Afterward, about 50 scouts and mothers viewed the film Something for the Girls.
Stanley Pursley son of Mr and Mrs E A Pursley of Hearne has earned a Master of Education from Western State College Gunnison Colorado. He a Hearne High School grad and athletic star is now in his second year as head coach at Leadville High School Colorado.
Mrs Wanda Lee and Mr and Mrs F B Fisher and Mr and Mrs Johnny Denman spent the weekend in Houston visiting relatives On the return trip from Bee ville Mrs Sarah Bowl ing stopped in San Antonio and visited relatives They attended church at Lackland Baptist Church where James Oran Todd is pastor Several locals hosted visitors including Mrs Cecil Butler and Mrs Pearl Cass at Boswell Nursing Home Rockdale Miss Theopal Nelson of Milano visited the Kvoye Cass home Arch ie Murrey of San Antonio joined Mrs Lessie Murrey and relatives Last Friday Roy Cass returned from a trip to states where she worked at State Fairs for the Flying V Ranch in Hearne Billy Reese of Cameron visited the Wayne Lee family Saturday night Weekend guests with Holt Ward were Mrs Lucile Fletcher Sonny Charles Johnny and David of De Ridder La Kirk Baker of Houston visited while en route to Baylor University and rode with Hazle Thomas in his new convertible Mrs Roger Kingsley hosted visitors from Bellville and Houston at her home with L W Keeling Joanny Carlson and daughter Ted Maguire of Hearne and Mrs J T Marrs of Rockdale.
