Porter to Lead Baylor Music Clinic at First Baptist

Dr. Euell Porter, Baylor University professor of music, will conduct a music workshop with the adult choir at First Baptist Church on September 10 11 13 and 16. Sessions run 7 to 9 p m except September 16 from 3 to 4 30 p m. Porter began teaching in Hearne in 1933 and at Baylor directs the a capella choir chapel choir and freshman choir while teaching voice and choral music.

Brady Jr. Enrolls at Tulane for Medical Degree

Alfred Brady Jr. leaves Sunday for New Orleans to enroll at Tulane University for further study toward his Doctor of Medicine. He completed post graduate work at the University of Texas and holds a B S from UT after Hearne High School. He is the son of Mr and Mrs A B Brady.

Fight shatters Vince's window in brief affray charge

A large plate glass window at Vince's Store was broken last Sunday at 4 13 p m during a fight between Victor Montelongo of Hearne and Ruben Cisneros of Odem. Both men were charged in City Court with affray and released on cash bonds.

Hearne Eagles Open 1962 Season At Connally

Hearne's Eagles travel to Waco Friday night to open the 1962 football season against Connally High School. Game time is 8:00. Connally moves up to Class AA, District 17-AA, after reaching state quarters last year. Coach Ken Batson returns 12 lettermen, while Connally's Cotton Lindloff starts with ten veterans. The Hearne lineup features starter Chester Russell at quarterback with a backfield including Larry Coe, Tim and Jim Batson, and proves strong at guard and tackle positions with Hawthorne, Pursley, Lund, and Mathis among starters. Connally's Pete McDonald, Wayne Pick, Gary Rodgers, and Mike Easton headline an experienced offense. The game description notes Wing T style and expected defensive schemes, with a sale of reserved seats at the high school.

Town and Country Food Store Opens Saturday Hearne

Town and Country Food Store opens at 702 Market Street Hearne with a 2400 square foot building. Luke Roffino built the structure and leases to the Austin based firm Roffing will as manager and Charles Aitimore assistant manager. The store will operate 6 30 a m to 11 p m seven days a week and includes a 220 square foot refrigerated vault. William L Longshore is president of Town and Country Food Stores, which began in Austin in 1966 with two stores.

Delay on East Davis Street Project Stalls Over Signups

City manager N L McCarver said September hopes for the East Davis Street curb and gutter project are dashed as fewer than half of about fifty affected property owners have signed to pay $1.25 per foot. Storm sewers for a three block stretch are ready, funded by municipal bonds, but await owner consent.

Mrs. Bessie Hand Dies After Long Illness

Mrs. Bessie Hand aged 80 died Monday morning at the home of her daughter Mrs Young Oldham in Petteway after a long illness. Born in Mississippi on November 9 1861 she had lived in Robertson County over 50 years mostly in Boone Prairie. She was a Baptist. Survived by another daughter Mrs C L Wallace of Franklin a son John Hand of Grand Prairie and six grandchildren.

Sharon Dolney to Graduate From Dallas Nursing School

Miss Sharon Dolney will graduate from the St. Paul Hospital School of Nursing in Dallas with exercises on September 9. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Teofil F Dolney of Hearne and will remain on the St. Paul Hospital nursing staff after graduation.

Graveside Rites For W. Gaskin

Funeral services for William Dempsey Gaskin, 59, of Franklin were held at the Marquez cemetery Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. He died in a Hearne hospital. Born in Mississippi, he spent most of his life in Leon County and lived in Franklin in recent years. He is survived by his widow, two daughters Sarah Parker of Madisonville and Addie Gaskin of Franklin, four sons William of Elm Mott, Jim of Waco, Edward and Bobby of Franklin, and two sisters Mrs. Bill Hutto of Buffalo and Mrs. Pearl Wallace of Conroe.

Death Claims Mrs. Freeman

Mrs. Blanche E. Freeman, 82, of Bryan died Friday in a Bryan hospital after 14 years’ residence there. Born November 5, 1879 in Limestone County, she was a member of First Methodist Church. Funeral services were Sunday at Hillier Funeral Home with Rev. Morris House officiating. Burial followed at Rosse City Cemetery. She is survived by four daughters, two sons, eleven grandchildren, and sixteen great grandchildren.

Enroll Opening Day in Hearne Public Schools

Superintendent G. G. Grant reports Hearne public schools with 1,560 students on opening day, comparing to 1,418 in a prior year. Enrollment in three white schools totaled 377, with East Side High School and other campuses accounting for the rest, amid overall varied district figures.
