Trial date set for Pete Scamardo in Degelia murder case
Pete Scamardo of Hearne faces trial November 17 in Edinburg before Judge Tom Hartley in 92nd District Court on charges as an accomplice to the July 6 1968 murder of Sam Degelia Jr near McAllen. Indictment says Scamardo promised $2000 to Harrelson to kill Degelia. Harrelson and Jerry Watkins face separate trials. Degelia’s body found July 11. Prosecution led by Oscar McInnis. defense lawyers include Thomas Sharpe Jr and Neil Caldwell. Scamardo free on 50000 bond awaiting trial.

Franklin Youth Critical After Pick-up Overturns
Tex Oliver Winstead 15 of Franklin was listed in critical condition after a 1956 Chevrolet pickup overturned Monday at 10 40 a m near Wheelock on Farm to Market Road 46. Driver Mike Lynn Scurlock of La Porte, owner Mrs R D McLeod of Franklin, passenger Tinstead, and witness Officer Ed Korenek tied speed to the crash. Scurlock attempted to pass another vehicle and lost control. Winstead was thrown 76 feet. He was taken to Scott and White Hospital. investigation to continue for days with charges depending on his survival.
