Trial date set for Pete Scamardo in Degelia murder case

Pete Scamardo of Hearne faces trial November 17 in Edinburg before Judge Tom Hartley in 92nd District Court on charges as an accomplice to the July 6 1968 murder of Sam Degelia Jr near McAllen. Indictment says Scamardo promised $2000 to Harrelson to kill Degelia. Harrelson and Jerry Watkins face separate trials. Degelia’s body found July 11. Prosecution led by Oscar McInnis. defense lawyers include Thomas Sharpe Jr and Neil Caldwell. Scamardo free on 50000 bond awaiting trial.

Hearne schools face deferral of federal funds action

HEW informed Hearne Independent School District that its desegregation plan is inadequate and not effectively eliminating the dual system. Final approval of federal funds for new programs is deferred for up to 90 days pending hearings and a decision. Also noted are 25 allegations of non compliance and a requested district response within 20 days.

Bremond High Names Faculty and Football Prospects

F M Programs Listed In County

The Texas Highway Commission approves a 1970 State Highway Safety and Improvement Program with 6,373.2 miles of construction costing 51.1 million and right of way and relocation aid totaling 94.7 thousand. A large portion funds reconstruction of highways and Farm to Market roads including widening and improved surfacing. In Robertson County the FM program includes FM 979 Calvert to FM 46 10.7 miles and FM 1040 east of New Baden to OSR 7.7 miles with seal coat costs of about 16,100 and 10,600 respectively.

Hearne City Budget Hearing Called Under Charter

Article Nine section 9.08 of the Hearne City Charter requires a yearly public hearing on the proposed city budget. The hearing is set for 7:30 p m on Monday in the City Council chambers. Voters Mailed ASCS Ballots in Robertson County

Ballots have been mailed to all known eligible voters in Robertson County for ASCS community committeemen elections. Ballots must be signed on the return envelope by September 10 to count. Tabulation is set for Friday September 19 at 8 a.m. Newly elected committeemen and delegates meet September 24 to elect one county committeeman and two alternates. If you did not receive a ballot, contact the Franklin office.

Red Cross Seeks Larger Hurricane Camille Relief Total

The American Red Cross plans to raise 17 million dollars for Camille victims along the Gulf Coast and up to Virginia, higher than the initial six million. Robertson County valuations rose from 162 to 404 dollars. Donations may be mailed to Mrs J H Collier in Mumford or Mrs M M Ottea in Hearne.

Franklin Youth Critical After Pick-up Overturns

Tex Oliver Winstead 15 of Franklin was listed in critical condition after a 1956 Chevrolet pickup overturned Monday at 10 40 a m near Wheelock on Farm to Market Road 46. Driver Mike Lynn Scurlock of La Porte, owner Mrs R D McLeod of Franklin, passenger Tinstead, and witness Officer Ed Korenek tied speed to the crash. Scurlock attempted to pass another vehicle and lost control. Winstead was thrown 76 feet. He was taken to Scott and White Hospital. investigation to continue for days with charges depending on his survival.
