Hearne Public Schools Open With Record 1,624 Students

Superintendent Dr Henry Benarden reports 1624 students enrolled on opening day August 29, a district record. Previous year totals were 1581 in 1976 and 1564 in 1975 with breakdowns: East Side 243 kindergarten and first grade, North Side 518 grades 2-5, Junior High 397 grades 6-8, High School 466 grades 9-12. He expects total to rise by about 100 after Labor Day.

Lil Folks Day Care Center Opens Hearne

Mr and Mrs Tony Hackworth announce financing approval for Lil Folks Day Care Center in Hearne. The state licensed facility will offer infant care and field trips with hot meals. Hours are 6 30 a m to 6 p m Monday to Friday and optional Friday Saturday care 6 p m to 2 a m. Call Wheelock at 4284715 for details.

Meeting For Adult Classes At North Side School Library

An organizational meeting for Adult Basic Education and General Education Development classes will be held Tuesday September 6 at 7 p.m. in the North Side School library. Eligible attendees are those 17 or older not completed high school and out of school at least one year. Materials and books will be provided free. Ricky Pressley of College Station visited last week with his grandmother Mrs. Irma W. Pressley.

Tenfold Rise in Measles Cases Sparks Health Warning

Dr. Ron Huddleston reports a tenfold year to date rise in measles cases versus last year, with five deaths totaling 2.7 per 1000 cases among 1,871 cases through July 30. Public health urges immunization for infants six months during exposure, with boosters at 18 months and 15 months as standard, and updated boosters for those immunized before 12 months or before 1968.

Week Two Accidents Reported in Calvert and Hearne

Highway Patrolman Haskell Lunsford investigated two noninjury accidents this past week. Clara Ortega of Calvert drove a 1968 Pontiac that collided with Malcom Howard of Franklin’s 1977 Dodge pickup on Logan Street at 3:30 p.m. Thursday August 25. Howard turned from an alley onto Logan as Ortega westbound approached. In the second incident, Lee R. Langston Jr. of Fort Worth drove a 1971 Ford 10.3 miles south of Hearne on Highway 190 when front wheels shimmed, the vehicle left the road, down an embankment and through a fence.

Church singing discontinued at Mount Pleasant Baptist

Annie Alexander of Livingstone visited Hearne with his sister Mr. and Mrs. T. H. Stotts and children Connie and Kevin. The regular singing at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church has been discontinued until further notice.

Texas DPS chief predicts 44 may die over Labor Day weekend

Texas Highway Patrol Director Col. Wilson E Speir warned Labor Day weekend traffic could claim 44 lives from 6 pm Friday to midnight Monday. He noted 50 died in 1976 and said deaths so far this year run 5 to 6 percent higher, urging restraint and sobriety. The DPS will deploy all troopers to monitor highways and target reckless driving.

D A Salvaggio Receives Diploma at Texas A&M

Dominic A Salvaggio was awarded a diploma by the Institute of Electronic Science at Texas A&M University August 19 in Rudder Tower graduation ceremonies. He was among 25 students completing the 18 month course. Hearne High School graduate, son of Mr and Mrs Tony Salvaggio of Hearne, plans to work in Dallas. Ali Kenneth Kesner is on a 30 day leave in Hearne with family before duty in Korea. His mother Mrs Margie Kesner, grandson Tim Kesner of Rockdale and Miss Johanna DeStefano of Mumford met his plane in Houston after arrival from Tyndall AFB Florida.

Eagles Open Friday Season With Hempstead Bobcats

Hearne Eagles coach Bob Davis schedules the season opener with Hempstead on Friday September 2 at 8 pm in Hempstead. Last year Hearne beat Hempstead 14 6 and Davis expects improved play with 13 returning lettermen and strong linemen and backs highlighted by Gradington Flemings Moore Humber and Mullinnix among others. Final scrimmage vs Hillsboro yielded three Hearne scores while shutting out Hillsboro on August 26.

Valden Robertson Named New HHA Executive Director

Valden Robertson becomes Hearne Housing Authority executive director effective September 1, succeeding W. D. Ramby who resigned due to health. A retired Air Force lieutenant colonel with 24 years in service, Robertson holds business degrees from the University of Colorado and St Edwards University. He taught in Alexandria before moving to Hearne, is married with two children, and active in the Masonic Lodge and Baptist Church.

Jaycees Assist Lewis Telethon Fund Drive

The Hearne Jaycees will aid the Jerry Lewis telethon for muscular dystrophy on September 4-5. They set up headquarters at Brewer Ford Mercury on Market Street from Sunday night until 4 p.m. Monday for donations by phone or drop off. The Bremend Tigers host Rogers at 8 p m and Calvert Trojans visit Valley Mills on Wilkerson Field at 8 p m. The Franklin Lions travel to Thorndale for an eight o'clock game.

Franklin Receives HUD 250000 Block Grant

The City of Franklin received a 280000 community development block grant from HUD to improve housing and living conditions in low and moderate income areas. Funds cover water distribution 37000 sewage improvements 906000 street paving 36000 rehabilitation grants 625000 demolition 64500 and administration 13000. An environmental assessment found no significant adverse impacts and comments are invited by September.
