King Cotton Dethroned By Grain And Other Crops

The Hearne area shifts from cotton to grain sorghum sunflowers soybeans and popcorn as costs and prices push farmers away from cotton. Sunflowers may expand in 1976 with Frito Lay buying oil. popcorn acreage starts small. Grain prices have fallen from 5.75 to 3.60 per cwt affecting planning and contracts. Strong entities include Hearne Brazos Bottom Frito Lay Hempstead and The Democrat.

Bremond Elects New Fire Chief

Richard Bielamowicz was elected fire chief of the Bremond Volunteer Fire Department after Frank White retired after 28 years of service. Elzey Groholski was elected assistant fire chief. The department meets monthly on the second and fourth Tuesdays at the fire station.

Red Cross Drive Underway in Robertson County

Lad Nickelson of Franklin chairs the Robertson County Red Cross Drive as letters go out to Calvert Franklin and Hearne residents. Bremond also participates through its United Fund Drive. Contributions can be mailed or left at Citizens State Bank Calvert First National Bank Franklin or Planters and Merchants Bank Hearne.

Local girls named to Sam Houston dean’s list

Two area students earned dean’s list honors at Sam Houston State University Huntsville for the fall term. Dorothy Jean Bishop Hearne achieved a 3.7 GPA and Barbara Ann Norfleet Mumford earned a 3.0 GPA.

Commissioners Court In Special Session

Robertson County Commissioners Court met in special session to hear two presentations on water and electric power tied to a proposed upper Navasota River Reservoir. Brazos River Authority outlined lake’s recreational and water supply potential. project largely lies in Limestone County with portions in Robertson and Leon Counties. construction planned for 1975 financed by water sales to Texas Utility Generating for cooling in two lignite fueled plants. 650 jobs during construction and about 350 once in operation.

Federal Judge Rules for Robertson County Officers in Civil Suit

Judge Roberts of the Western District of Texas in Waco ruled in favor of Sheriff E P Elliott and Robertson County Attorney Bryan F Russ in a civil rights suit brought by Adam Cavazos. Cavazos sought 60000 dollars claiming Elliott arrested over disputed checks. the court found no civil rights violation and that Elliott acted within the law.

District Churches To Meet April 12

The Lincoln Mission One Area Workshop will meet with the New Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Bryan on Saturday, April 12, at nine o'clock in the morning. Rev. J. Watters and Mrs. Parthenia Smith will lead the meeting with northern churches of the Lincoln District Association and special bus accommodations from Hearne to Bryan have been scheduled.

Kathy Pratt daughter of Mr and Mrs Jesse Pratt has been named to the Dean's List at Haylor University for a GPA of 3.8 or better. Pratt, majoring in Library Science, was 1974 valedictorian of the all High School graduating class.

Murder Charge Filed In Mumford Shooting

Albert Bolden Williams was arrested in Bryan and charged with murder in the March 10 shooting death of Walter Nelson at Collier's Store in Mumford. Nelson died during a store robbery witnessed by three of his children. a getaway car was found overturned west of Mumford. The case, led by Robertson County Sheriff Sonny Elliott, remains under investigation.

Bremond City Election Ballot With Five Names Set

Bremond voters will cast ballots April 5 at the Bremond Fire Station. Mayor Frank White Jr. is unopposed for reelection. Councilman Mikolajewski faces challenger Joe Budzisz for place one. Mikolajewski works at the Texas Highway Department Hearne office and Budzisz is an A&M Press printer. Kronenberger and Staskey are unopposed for places two and three respectively. School Board trustees Herman Yezak and Jack Smith are unopposed for reelection at the Justice of the Peace Courthouse.

County Society Meets Sunday in Calvert Library

The Robertson County Historical Survey Committee met Sunday March 16 at 1:30 p m in the Katy H Stricker Library Calvert with 21 members present. President Mrs J P McCollum presided as Pauline Burnitt led the program and guest speaker Mrs D L Alford spoke on Calvert Burleson County museum reconstruction. Social hour followed hosted by Mrs Burnitt Thelma Gaffney Betty Gray. Next meeting set for April 6 1:30 p m in Calvert library.

Two Hearne Men Sentenced for Burglary in Bremond Case

Hearne residents Kenneth Boone aged 21 and Johnny Ace Chappel aged 19 pleaded guilty to burglary in district court in Franklin. Both were sentenced to 10 years probation for a 1973 break in and robbery of the A A Gift Shop in Bremond, with order to make full restitution.

Livestock Show Set Saturday in Robertson County

The 10th annual Junior Livestock and Auction Show by Future Farmers of America and 4-H Clubs in Robertson County will be held Saturday March 22 in Hearne. Events start at Fireman's Hall arena at 8 a.m. with animal registration and weighing in. Rabbit judging at 9:30, swine at 10, beef judging at 1, and auction at 3. A cake and pie baking contest with ribbons will be awarded. Arte and needlecraft entries are invited. contact any FFA or FHA instructor.

Houston Man Injured In Three Way Crash

A Houston man, James W. Keller Jr. 43, sustained serious injuries with bone fractures and internal trauma after a three car collision a mile and a half south of Hearne at 8 10 p m Friday He is in the ICU at Scott and White Hospital Temple after ambulatory transfer from Robertson County Community Hospital Two Hearne residents Maxine Newman and Arthur Dees were hospitalized in Hearne and released Saturday Dees was northbound on Highway 6 attempting to pass two cars Keller was making a left into a private drive when the crash occurred A pickup driven by dae Luis Albares 24 of Hearne struck Keller s car Keller was cited for driving with license suspended and making an unsafe turn Dees faced a charge of driving while intoxicated and Albares received a charge though the article text is incomplete
