Parents Visit Hearne Schools Climax Public Week

Parents are invited to visit Hearne schools for Texas Public School Week activities. At Hearne High School, arrivals by 7:00 bring a child’s schedule and tour in 15 minute blocks across six periods. Dinner at East or West Side Elementary is available 6:30 to 7:30 with advance notice. A 7:30 program in each child’s room follows, with a continued plan for next year at Blackshear and the high school auditorium.

Revival at First Baptist Church in Calvert

The First Baptist Church of Calvert will hold a Spring Revival March 8 to 15 with two services daily. Morning service at 7:00 a.m. and evening service at 7:00 p.m. Coffee and doughnuts served before the morning service. Dr. J. P. McBeth will preach and Dan Pratt will sing. Public invited.

Legion Of Merit Award To Wheelock Native

Dr. Charles L. Novosad Jr. born in Wheelock and now of Odessa received the Legion of Merit in a ceremony at the Odessa Naval Reserve Training Center. Honored for Navy Medical Corps service as a lieutenant, he credited with saving two men after a helicopter crash in Antarctica. He is an A&M College graduate and attended Baylor University College of Medicine on a Jesse H. Jones scholarship worth $5,000.

Death Claims Bill McLeroy in Houston

Bill McLeroy aged 52 died of a heart attack in Houston on Monday February 23. His wife Ruth Bullock of Hearne survives along with a son and daughter. Funeral services and burial were held in Bryan on Thursday February 26 at 2 p m. He was nephew of Mr and Mrs Wood McLeroy.

Births Announced for Billy Alan and Becky Bolling

Mr and Mrs Billy F Bush announce the birth of a son Billy Alan born March 4 in a Hearne hospital. Mr and Mrs Raymond H Bostick of Corpus Christi announce the birth of a daughter Becky Bolling on March 1. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs O H Bostick of Hearne.

Three In Contest For School Board

Hearne voters will select two trustees on April 4 as three candidates appear on the ballot. Incumbents Col H H Speede and O W Couch seek re election. Jack Ramsay, ex teacher coach from Odessa and Texas Christian University graduate, filed this week. Ramsay moved to Hearne in 1956 and works with Citizens Ice Co. He is active in the Chamber of Commerce Lions Club American Legion Fire Department and Grace Methodist Church.

Annual Blue and Gold Banquet For Cubs Held On Thursday

Cub Pack 42 hosted its annual Blue and Gold banquet Thursday evening February 26 at the First Baptist Church Educational Building with 160 Cubs and families in attendance. Milton I. Aalen presided as MC. Webelos opened with Leon Davenel in charge. Clayton Potter gave the invocation and attendees sang Happy Birthday as Scouts celebrated their 0th birthday. Awards highlighted the program with Bobcat pins, Wolf and Bear badges, Arrow awards, Lion Badge, service stars, and Webelos badges presented by leaders including Milton Strong and Lee Martin.

Mayor H C Jack Kelly and City Attorney Bill Palmes join five aldermen in filing for reelection ahead of the April municipal vote. Candidates include John Escoubas C S Massey John Orts Leon Wilson and Vince Campise with Edna Earl Sloan also running for alderman. Two mayoral opponents are S B Jones and W L Peyton. Filing deadline is March 7 and polling places are Fire Station and High School Gymnasium.

Laundromat Set to Open in Hearne on Thursday

Hearne gains a new coin operated self service laundromat to be opened Thursday March 12 in the old Super Sales building on Market Street near the Austin highway. The 24 hour automatic facility is owned by H. E. Lacey of Lufkin and L. T. Cariker of Cushing, who already run laundromats in Lufkin Garrison and Trinity.

Hearne beauty shop to open weekly except Sundays

Mrs. White, once a Houston beautician, relocated to Hearne with Mr. White last August to run a new shop. The business will be open daily except Sundays, according to the announcement.

Tickets On Sale For C-C Chamber Banquet

Tickets for the annual Chamber of Commerce banquet are on sale at the U of C office. Only 200 tickets will be sold and buyers should act quickly. The banquet is March 17 from 8 to 10 p.m. at the American Legion Hall with principal speaker H. Pittman, an Austin banker and humorist.

Funeral services for William Virgil Hill of Alvin were held at the Assembly of God Church in Hearne on Sunday March 1 at 3 p m. Rev E R Mason officiated with Heartfield Funeral Home directing. Pallbearers were George Jones T A Gandy Herman Murphy C L Scott Jack Dodson and Buford Chappel. He was born in Groesbeck on November 29 1896 and died February 28 1959 in Alvin at age 62. Survived by two sons Elzie Hill Houston Alec Hill Hearne two daughters Mary Lou and Janice Hill Dallas a brother Van E Hill Hearne and two sisters Mrs Jack Dodson Calvert and Mrs Henry Hornsby Galveston.

The sixth annual Hearne Invitational Golf Tournament will be held on the municipal Hinks Sunday April 5. A blind bogey event with five flights of 18 holes entrants must tee off before 1 p.m. Winners receive Wilson Top Notch Woods runners up a dozen golf balls and the medalist two Samsonite luggage pieces. Free barbecued chicken for all entrants. The event benefits the Hearne Golfers Building Fund.

Hearne Public Library Gains Popularity in 1958

The Hearne Public Library loaned 3,369 books to 382 readers in 1958. Adults took 1,672 volumes and juveniles 1,697, with fiction favored over non fiction. The library added 258 volumes—192 purchased and 66 donated—bringing totals to 1,928 volumes. It operates on a $1,200 city grant plus overdue fines.
