Hearne School Board follows Texas Education Agency plan to fix facilities for 10 to 15 years. Three options abandon West Side Elementary and relocate grades, remodel Hearne High School, and expand the Blackshear and administration buildings at estimated costs of 419500 to 509500 dollars.
T/Sgt Royce A Jones was transferred to James Connally Air Force Base as NCO in charge of the laboratory medical division. He is the son of Mr and Mrs George W Jones, Hearne High School 1951 graduate, enlisted in 1951, spent seven years in Japan, married to a Japanese native, with one child.
Mrs. Locke Moss is recovering satisfactorily in a local hospital after major surgery last week. Bob Hilburn, recently operated on at S. P. Hospital in Houston, is stated to be satisfactory. Frank Hall remains recuperating at the Veterans Hospital in Marlin after surgery.
Elsey Williams sustained a knee injury and facial cut when his car collided with a vehicle driven by John S. Kauffman of Kansas City Missouri Tuesday at 1 p m at the Brown and Magnolia Streets intersection. The other driver said he did not see the traffic light. both cars suffered extensive damage. Chief Don Tidwell investigated and filed charges against Kauffman for failing to stop at the traffic light.
Hearne High School Stage Band under Sherry L. Albritton will be featured on Town Talk over Channel 3 Bryan on March 7 at 11 00 a m The program spotlights the band and its director advising the audience of the televised item.local paper tone.
Hearne Parent-Teacher Association members heard Dr J Roy Willingham discuss Basic Human Needs with focus on emotional needs of children at the High School Auditorium. Members endorsed a personal fundraising campaign for better education following a suggestion by Wilbur Strong. Class attendance awards went to Mrs T W Welborns first grade Mrs Jakie Silvermans fifth grade and the Freshman class.
Books checked out during the week ending February 25 121 include a single new purchase. The library hours are 1 to 5 p m Tuesdays through Fridays and 7 30 to 10 30 a m Saturdays. It remains closed on Sundays and Mondays.
Hearne Eagles baseball will start Tuesday March 7 at 4 p m against Crockett Bulldogs at the city park diamond. Coach Ken Batson leads a roster of about 200 players many with prior season action. The schedule continues through March to May including games with Allen Academy Livingston Bryan Temple Cameron A M Consolidated Rockdale and district contests.
Four new names joined the Alder man race this week bringing the field to ten candidates for five seats. Filing were J R Delley Tommie Tyler W L Peyton and Grady Griffin with City Secretary Joe R Turner Jr. Vince Campise John Escoubas and Leon Wilson had already filed for re election. The mayoral race remains two candidates S B Jones and Jack Ramsay. Filing deadline is midnight March 4 and absentee voting starts March 15. Voters will use two ballots in the April 4 election one for city officials and one for the proposed charter.
The Cub Scouts of Pack 42 met at East Side Cafetorium on February 23 for their Blue and Gold Banquet. Awards included Most Ingenious to a horse trailer entered by Jim Stovall and Most Useful to a dashshund and pipe rack crafted by Freddie Taylor. Multiple rank and arrow awards were presented to Wolf, Bear, Lion, and Bobcat members, with two year service stars and a ceremony led by Mike Jones and the Zeigs.
Forty Hearne School Bands members performed in Corsicana on February 25 with 15 vying for chairs in the all region concert and reading bands. Concert band winners include Bill Jackson Donald Simpson Kathleen Cotropia Patricia Zann Kathie Mayes Elaine Pinkerton. Reading band chairs go to Rena Rogers Frieda Meadows Connie Martin Betty Birdwell Zane Wallace. Band Director Sherry Albritton noted competition with 250 other students from Corsicana Ennis Waxahachie Mexia and nearby towns.
The Shiloh Baptist Church will host a nightly revival from March 5 to March 12 led by evangelist Rev. Howard Smith a former missionary to Africa.
Congressman Jim Wright told a Hearne Chamber of Commerce banquet crowd of over 300 Friday night that freedom sustains the highest living standards but nations are choosing between opposed ideologies. He warned the U S risks losing the war of ideas and urged better salesmanship at presenting America as a pattern. Wright avoided politics and spoke after a day of campaigning that began in Galveston. New chamber officers were introduced. snow delayed City Manager McCarver from duties. The banquet was held in the high school gym with festive decor.
Hearne Public Schools observe Public School Week in Texas with open houses at Hearne Elementary West Side and East Side March 7 5 30 to 6 30 p m and 6 30 to 7 30 p m High School hosts Public School Night March 9 7 30 p m with assembly class periods and refreshments Student Council offers babysitting and a nursery for attendees.
Mrs John Moss spent the past week visiting in Dallas with her son Jimmy Whitaker.
Obie W. Kirk and R. M. Bob Stovall filed petitions early with business manager Jack Maris to appear on the April 1 School Board ballot joining Dr. E. M. Boyd and incumbents John Nig-Hazzo and Dr. Ray Cruse in a field of five for three seats. Polling will be at the fire station with C. P. Heary presiding judge and assistants. Absentee voting runs at the county clerk's Franklin office from March to three days before election. Any Hearne School District resident who paid a poll tax is eligible to vote.
