The regular editor is away this week so special editors are not brought forward. We have several more on the list and many treats for readers, but most future and past items appear shy and hesitant like a bashful youth at his first party. The noteworthy people are those who do not rush into print and the contributors presented are eminently worth while, though coaxing is needed to get them to publish.
A. W. Phielpape and Mrs. Emma Joiner of Austin were united in marriage Sunday night at 7:30 in the Methodist parsonage with Rev. McGee officiating. The Democrat offers congratulations and best wishes for a smooth voyage on matrimony’s sea.
The June July term criminal docket was called Monday morning. Four African American defendants faced burglary theft and switch charges with two-year sentences. One youth, barely 16, had suspended sentence recommended for good behavior and was released on a $500 recognizance. This marked the first conviction under the suspended sentence law in the county.
Resolutions honor Mrs R A Allen the first secretary of Norwood Cemetery Association mourns her loss to the community and family. The notes express condolence and pledge to publish the resolutions in The Hearne Democrat while noting J F Kemball of Temple visited Hearne.
Mrs. Alice Maud Allen of Hearne died at the Baptist Sanitarium Dallas after a five week illness and an operation on June 16. She was buried at Norwood Cemetery. Born in Fairfield Free son e County in 1836 she married Robert A. Allen in Bryan in 1868. They moved to Hearne in 1878 where he later opened a major store. She was a devoted Presbyterian and longtime resident of Hearne, beloved for her cheerful Christian life and charity. Survived by son B C Allen of Hearne and five sisters in Calvert Silver City and Hearne. the Democrat extends sympathy.
Miss Mary Hanover wed Rev. Long of Dallas at her father's Wheelock home. Local residents traveled to Franklin on business. Wheelock hosted two baseball games 18 to 0 and 25 to 1 with a season total of 74 to 5. Community notes include visits, travel, church, peach market activity, and a Glorious Fourth mention.
Short notes from Bishopville list community health as good and mention several Sunday visits. Mrs. Moore spent Sunday with Mrs. Murray, Mr. and Mrs. R. F. Merchant were at New Baden, Ethel Effie Mathews and Velora Gaffin visited Zara Lloyd, singing at Bro Tidwell’s Sunday was enjoyed by all, L. L. Griffin and A. Lloyds families spent Sunday together, D. F. Lloyd and wife visited ZT Lloyd, Rose Ethel Moore and Dela Andrews along with Reagan Teague and Chas Merchant were also mentioned in accompanying notes.
Spring Creek reports strong community health and promising crops after a recent shower. Mr Ernest Moss and family join Pinoak Creek residents from Richmond Fort Bend county. The piece also notes the death of W G Moss of Buckholt Milam county at age 38, with surviving family and interment at Norwood cemetery Hearne on June 16.
The message records visits by Elliott and Mrs. Boswell to Hearne for a prediction, D L Dotson visiting an ailing father in Calvert, and the Elliott baseball team losing two straight to Kosse. Delegates Merchant Smith and McNeel will attend the County Union at Black Jack on the 4th and 5th next month. Watermelon thieves took all but two melons from Mr McNee's patch Saturday night, leaving a single torn shoe as a clue. The writer asks for help locating a local "Jonah" and notes rain is widespread except Elliott.
