Seventeen Beltonites including the High School band stopped in Hearne at 10 30 Wednesday to invite Hearne citizens to Belton s 14th annual Fourth of July celebration in the city park Promises included a mammoth parade amusements for all band concerts and a big rodeo The group toured Fourth street mingling with merchants and shoppers while riding toy vehicles and creating a festive atmosphere
The Woman's Missionary Society of the Methodist church held its monthly social on Tuesday afternoon at Mrs W T Dillard's home with Mrs J M Derrell and Mrs Otho Mathews assisting. Topics discussed were A Day in the Life of a Rural Deaconess and The Rural Church under Mrs H W Cummings. A light refreshment plate was served.
Sunday School and church were enjoyed by many on Sunday afternoon. Attendees from Bryan included Ellie Sikes and her family, W. L. Sikes, and from Brem Mr. and Mrs. James Peyton and children. Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie Peyton visited Steele's Store on Saturday night.
Five hundred or more Negro residents heard eloquent speeches at the annual Emancipation celebration held Monday. The program featured speeches followed by a barbecue feast and athletic events at picnic grounds off highway six, south of the viaduct. The event was under the Negro Chamber of Commerce, noted for its work since organization.
Baptist W M S Circle No 1 met at Mrs Walter Smiths on June 12 with thirteen ladies. Bible study led by Mrs Oliver. refreshments of sherbet and cake. Circle No 1 met again at Mrs Lee Joseys on June 19 with fifteen ladies. pledge to visit townspeople and enlist them in the work for the Master. Next meeting with Mrs Harper on June 26. Circle No 2 met with Mrs Cecil Rhodes for Bible study. fifteen ladies present. Song Wonderful Words of Life. Prayer by Mrs J C Broughton and devotional by Mrs J G Ely. Bible study led by Mrs Hoyt. Refreshments served. Next Monday circle to meet with Mrs J T Hamilton for Royal Service program. C T Newton, lately of Rockdale, arrived to manage the local Friendly Store, succeeding R Alford. J T Hamilton, president of the Chamber of Commerce, R B Blanton, secretary, and Mrs J T Hamilton and Mrs R B Blanton attended district 4 East Texas Chamber meeting in Corsicana.
A Farm and Ranch column by T. J. Starr urges returning to core American values including truth and honesty, restraint in government, equal rights, and lawful justice. It laments corruption and class taxation while praising the Founding ideals and constitutional principles as the measure of governance. Also notes social visit: Mr. and Mrs. Starley O’Neal and Mrs. W. E. Shellman of Houston visited Hearne friends J. W. Horlock and others Thursday and Friday.
