Sunflowers Rise as Commercial Crop Hope in Texas
Hearne farmer John Nigliazzo and USDA expert Dr. Murray Kinsman lead research on two sunflower varieties. One aims to hybridize a northern seed to resist rust, the other to optimize oil seed production with safe, profitable yields. Sponsored by the Texas Cottonseed Crushers Association, the project studies pollination, pesticides, and processing, noting early harvest in about three weeks and potential to double cottonseed mill activity if successful.

Hearnes Bowed 3-0 by Del Valle in Bi District Play
Hearne Eagles closed the 1967 baseball season with a 3-0 loss to Del Valle in bi district at Austin. Del Valle took advantage of walks and errors, scoring in the first and third innings while Hearne stranded four hits. Joe Johnson struck out 11 for Hearne, but the offense produced only four hits and left the bases loaded in the fourth. Separately, Hearne residents lost power for 55 minutes Monday when a lightning strike damaged the Fairbanks Morse number four engine at the municipal plant, delaying generation and forcing a temporary tie-in with Brazos Electric.
