Government Forces Bracero Wage Increase for Cotton

Mexican government pressured Rio Grande Valley cotton growers to accept a $2.50 per hundred pounds picking rate for braceros. A halt at the Bracero Contracting Center in Hidalgo occurred July 16 after a federal restraining order paused enforcement. Judge Ingraham later issued a preliminary injunction. Valley employers filed an appeal, but the rate was adopted to recruit over 10,500 Mexican workers.

Peter Scasta Services Held For Wheelock Native

Peter J. Scasta, 72, Wheelock resident, died Monday in an Austin hospital. Retired farmer, he lived most of his life near Wheelock. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. from Hillier Funeral Home in Bryan, with Rev. Louis Hanna officiating. Interment followed in Wheelock Cemetery. Pallbearers listed, including Adolph Scasta and Emil Scasta. Born December 6, 1887 in Brazos County, he served in World War I in France for two years. He is survived by a sister Mrs. Joe Schovassa of Bryan and a brother Joe E. Scasta of Wheelock.

Harvey Elledge Dies Suddenly at 50

Harvey Elledge, 50, died at his Walnut Texas home from a heart attack. Funeral services were set for July 29 at 3 30 p m at Mount Alba Cemetery with Minister Lee Faulkner officiating and burial there. He had lived in Ridge and Franklin areas, worked for an Odessa oil company, with his return to the Walnut ranch last December. He is survived by his wife, a daughter Mrs Lee Killough of Levelland, two grandchildren, four sisters and four brothers.

Bates heads overseas with Marines from San Diego

James V. Bates, U S Marines, has left San Diego California with an overseas detachment aboard the Naval transport ship USS Bear. He will replace men serving with the Third Marine Division in the Far East. Bates is the son of Mr and Mrs H L Bates of Hearne.

Pickup and car collide on Farm Road 50 near Hearne

On July 20 at 11 50 a m a pickup driven by Mathew Salvaggio of Mumford and a car driven by Jose Rodriguez Martinez of Hearne collided on Farm Road 50 southwest of Hearne both heading south. Salvaggio tried to pass Martinez as Martinez turned left onto a private drive. Patrolman Tippit filed charges against Martinez for an improper turn and against his father Catarina Martinez for permitting an unlicensed driver.
