Editorial notes rising costs of producing papers and argues against 25-cent subscriptions. Asserts annual price of one dollar covers 52 issues, cheaper than a postage stamp, and explains administrative waste of 25-cent rates. Calls for unity in setting a standard price despite losses to grow readership.
In a conversation with Simo Lewis of Waco, a promoter of industrial ventures, Hearne be discussed locating a cotton mill in Robertson County. The editor notes no details but considers Hearne the best Texas site for such a mill and believes benefits to Hearne’s business and county farming citizens are obvious.
The thirty-fifth legislature enacted Chapter 179 requiring all legal notices to be published in a newspaper of general circulation in the county where the proceeding is pending. Beneficial to newspapers and, more importantly, to the public, it replaces notices posted in three places that few read with county paper publication.
Mrs. T. C. Nunn of Bryan visited relatives here Sunday. Mrs. M. V. Carson and her children returned to Austin Tuesday, accompanied by Mayor and Mrs. P. L. Brady and their children, guests for weeks. Mr. J. R. Wilson, a stalwart Democrat, renews efforts in community relations.
In a July 22 1917 letter from Austin to Judge J Felton Lane Hearne Texas the author urges citizens to support the railroads as the nation mobilizes for war. He explains a continental railroad system unifies 600 private lines, estimates equipment needs for an 80 000 man field army, and calls on citizens to maximize car use and adapt work norms to ensure timely troop and supply movement. He argues the nation cannot win without rail transport support and urges practical actions from readers.
The University of Texas will open as usual for the 1917 1918 session with adequate financial provision. Examinations for admission begin September 17 and run to September 20. Registration starts September 26 and continues to September 29. Degree candidates may register on any of the four days, other former students on Friday and Saturday, and first year students on Wednesday Thursday and the Saturday afternoon.
On or before September 20 students must apply to their dean for advanced standing and to remove course conditions. Examinations postponed and registration in medicine runs through October 1, with opening exercises and fall term classes starting October 1. Degree applications due September 29. Robert E.
