Mrs J G Philen Buried Saturday In Hearne Bank Pioneer
Funeral services for Mrs Mae Davis Philen were held at her home at 604 Magnolis Street at 106 a m Saturday July 12 with Rev A E Riemann of Houston officiating. Interment followed in Norwood Cemetery under Heartfield Funeral Home direction. Pallbearers were William Edward Hudson Joe D Wilson George B Wilson Jr Raymond Theiss Dr F W C Karney Jr and John Nigliazzo. She died at home July 10 after a long illness. Born December 16 1883 in Franklin Georgia she was 85 years six months and 24 days old. She and husband Mr J G Philen moved to Hearne in 1911 where he was cashier then president of the Planters and Merchants State Bank until selling interests to Roy O Ely in 1949.

Airman Portis Completes Basic Training at Lackland AFB
Airman Christopher D. Portis of Calvert completed basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio and was assigned to Keesler Air Force Base in Mississippi for administrative training. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Will Portis Jr. of Calvert and a graduate of W. D. Spigner High School.

Hearne woman dies after long community service
On May 29, 1949, Mrs. Philen passed away. She had been an active Hearne Parent-Teacher Association member and enjoyed the Hearne Music Lovers Club, Shakespeare Club, and American Red Cross work. Survived by son J Gilbert Philen Jr of Brownsville, three grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and brother J D McFadden of Port Arthur.

Rites Held For Marvin Scasta In Bryan
Final rites for Marvin Ray Scasta 18 of Lytle were at 4 p m Monday at Hillier Funeral Home Bryan with Rev R E Savage officiating. Burial followed at Rest Ever Memorial Park Bryan. He was killed Friday July 11 in an auto crash near Somerset. He was a student at A M University and member of First Baptist Church of Lytle. He is survived by his parents one brother Edwin Scasta of Lytle a grandfather Joe E Scasta of Wheelock and a grandmother Mrs Lizzie Murphy of Bryan.
