Meadors Loses Bid To Review Cemetery Land Case

John H. Meadors failed to win a review of a District Court decision that awarded 10 acres of land to the Camp Creek Cemetery Association. The denial cited lack of proof that fraud prevented an adequate defense, despite Meadors claiming miscommunication and misled notice from attorney Mac Bennett.

Mrs Sawyer Named District VFW Chaplain in Hearne

Mrs B V Sawyer was named district chaplain of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. She and husband, commander of Hearne Post 10358, attended the state convention in Houston last week. The post auxiliary won seven awards. the group meets July 7 at 7 p m in the Community Center.

Miss Sharon Golub Named Deputy Sheriff Candidate

Miss Sharon Golub of Hearne is not listed in a Seguin Girls State letter from last week. Sponsored by the American Legion, she was elected deputy sheriff of Grant County. Golub is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Golub.

Hearne Fire Department Barbecue at Fireman Hall

The Hearne Fire Department will host its annual businessman's barbecue at Fireman's Hall starting 7 30 p m Saturday July 9. Holiday weekend visitors included Mr and Mrs R G Mandrell their son Doug las Mandrell and a friend and their daughter Mrs Inez Allen all of Houston.

Slide Show Sunday at First Baptist Church

FEBC staff member Rev. Arthur C. Austin will present a slide show about FEBC work and the Christian message via radio in Asia and Latin America. Services at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. feature travelog images, including slides from communist China. FEBC operates 27 stations and eight studios, mostly in the Orient, broadcasting Christian programming in 72 languages to over 100 countries. Vietnamese FEBC staff evacuated from Saigon continue to produce programs in exile from Whittier.

First State Tries To Convert As National Bank

James Scamardo senior vice-president of the First State Bank Hearne confirms the bank has applied to convert from a state charter to a national charter. The move was approved at a June 8 shareholders meeting and the application delivered June 23. A National Banks examiner will review the local bank, with the Regional Administrator deciding based on that report. Scamardo says services will not change for customers and that the move should enhance future plans.

Legion Auxiliary Elects Officers for 1977 78

The American Legion Auxiliary met June 28 at 7 30 p m at Mrs Ada Sifuentes home. Officers elected for 1977 78 were Betty Altimore president Lucille Wilson and Ruby Lund first and second vice presidents Ada Sifuentes treasurer Ruby Boswell secretary John Sween S Mathis reporter Sarah Berlan chaplain and Toni Cordova historian. The next meeting is set for July 19 at 7 30 p m at Mrs Altimore home. Members and prospective members are urged to attend.

Revival Scheduled At Wheelock Church

The Wheelock Baptist Church will hold a revival beginning July 11 and continuing through July 16. Services start at eight each evening with evangelist Rev. R. W. Owens. Pastor Rev. Clifton Barnett and the congregation invite visitors to all services. Mr. and Mrs. Paul Jackson and son Chad of Temple celebrated the Fourth of July with the Jackson family.

Hearne Police Beat Reports Quiet Weekend

Police Chief E H Doc McCoslin said Hearne had fewer arrests than usual with none Tuesday morning. Seven held in jail included drunken drivers and marijuana cases from the highway patrol. one burglary at Dr Jack Lyons office involved a broken window and stolen items including an adding machine clock money fountain pen and pen holder. Investigating.

Spence Named Honor Pupil at Texas Woman’s University

Beverly Spence named honor pupil at Texas Woman’s University Denton for high scholastic averages. Dr. Dave L. Gates, vice president, notes Miss Beverly R. Spence is a senior library science major and daughter of Mrs. C. R. Gates of Hearne. Honor roll requires 2.3 or better on a 3.0 scale.

May 24 meeting details released by County Attorney Dana Harris. Indicted for murder were James Marvin Thomas and John L. Lewis. Patsy Fachorn was no-billed. Aggravated assault indictments include Leonard Odell Carey Benny L. Hooks Louis H. Donaldson Jerold Boring and David Bundage. Four burglary indictments include Milton Crawford Ralph Johnson with two not publishable. Louis Charles Stoneham indicted for robbery.

Three Attend Boys State on Texas Campus

Terry Conn Keith Jentsch and Wesley Floyd attended Boys State on the University of Texas campus in Austin from June 8 to 14. Conn sponsored by the American Legion of Hearne was named chairman of the state rules committee. Jentsch sponsored by the Hearne Chamber of Commerce was elected justice of the peace for Shark County. Floyd sponsored by the Hearne Lions Club also received an appointment at Boys State.

Rural accident spree prompts patrol inquiry

Highway Patrolmen H L Lunsford and Gary Henderson report investigating six crashes in a week across Hearne Marquez New Baden Calvert and Palestine areas. Incidents involved drivers Sammy Burkson Opal Vindiola Stephen Wolverton Donald Martin Randall Sanford Michael Meadors Ascension Perez and Lerve Alford. Injuries ranged from minor to broken bones and two people suffered head and chest injuries.

July Fourth Activities in Robertson County

Independence Day saw no public ceremonies in the county as many residents spent the day privately or at small gatherings. Sun baked yards and full taverns marked the holiday with fishing picnics along Walnut Creek and barbecues in Bre mond Calvert area. Grace Methodist Choir offered a patriotic program and Rev. Lee Roy Williams spoke on freedom. Hearne First Baptist held a Brady Ranch outing with a catered dinner and a flag pledge led by Guy Chandler. Bremond Knights of Columbus hosted a large barbecue for about 600 attendees consuming hundreds of pounds of sausage and beef.
