Meeting Set To Discuss Street Improvements Hearne meeting time set

Jas City Manager N L McCarver received a letter from D C Greer State Highway Engineer stating a 11 a m Tuesday July 11 meeting in Austin to discuss street improvements in Hearne. The meeting requested by the city will address Brown and North Market Streets with McCarver Mayor Jack Ramsay and city council members expected to attend to expedite the work.

Question Suspects In Assault Case

Acting Chief of Police R L Perkins told The Democrat one suspect was cleared in the attempted assault on Mrs Norman Boswell at her home last week. He added two other suspects were being questioned in the case.

New Arrivals Lucia Cisneros and Jasper Corpora Families

Mr. and Mrs. Lucia Cisneros welcomed a daughter Lucia born June 30 in Hearne. Mr. and Mrs. Jasper Corpora announced a son Jim Lewis born July 2 in a local hospital.

Golfers Elect New Officers At Hearne Meeting

Hearne Golf Association elected officers for the coming year at the Municipal Clubhouse on June 29. George F. Smith was re elected president with Charles Luster as vice president and Miss Martha Slagis as secretary and treasurer. Directors named were Sam Degelia Jr Fred Moss Ed Priestly Jack Martin and Ralph Leslie. J T French of Waco arrived to serve as the new golf pro for the association.

Rites Held For Linzy C Knight of Elliott

Linzy C Knight died Saturday after months of ill health. Funeral at Elliott Baptist Church Monday at 1 30 p m with Rev G T Turner and Rev B W Brackney officiating. Interment in Elliott Cemetery by Heartfield Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Otho Davis Clarence Davis Carl Krause J L Thomas Mitchell McMillan and Ray McMillan. Born December 20 1882 in Mississippi he was 78 years six months and 10 days. He spent most of his life in Elliott. Survivors include son Thomas Knight of Houston. daughters Elizabeth Bush Elliott Elmer Bates Hearne Alice Fay Josey Bryan and Roy Smith Houston. 19 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Also brothers Henry Knight and T L Knight of Slate Springs Mississippi.

Opposition To General Sales Tax Mobilized In Mumford

Statewide opposition to a general sales tax is being organized from Mumford in Robertson County. Led by Mrs. Jud Collier and Mrs. Effie Rambo of Epenchley, the Texas Democratic Women's State Committee opposes the tax and plans a July 10 rally in Austin at Wooldridge Park to urge defeat of the proposal. Robert E. Crozier of the Texas Retail Grocers Association backs the effort, arguing the tax would raise food costs and burden 94,000 retailers, with the grocers' 7,000-member group long opposing the tax since 1959.

Court of Honor Held by Boy Scout Troop 84

Boy Scout Troop 84 held a Court of Honor on Monday night with awards to members Milton Aalen Col H Speede and Charles Staany. Recipients included James Stasny second class Bobby Cruse Jimmy Aalen Hank Speede and Jerry Herrington first class Milton Strong star scout. Merit badges went to Bill Birdwell nature citizenship in the home Hank Speede basketry and Bobby Cruse hiking. Patrol Leaders Bars were awarded to Roy Crouch and Milton Strong with assistant Bars to Jerry Herrington and Mike Moore. Parents met as color slides of camping trips and Camporees were shown. The meeting closed with a Scout benediction led by Bill Birdwell.

William Curry Dies Suddenly at Wheelock Home

William Curry 56 of Wheelock died suddenly at his Wheelock home Tuesday evening. Born December 15 1904 he lived in the area and owned a Bryan business at his death. 1083 Enrolled In Summer Recreation Program

A total of 1083 participated in the summer recreation program during the week. Hearne won two Connie Mack League games, beating the Bryan Clippers 6-3 last Thursday and the Bryan Rockets 16-2 on Tuesday. Frank Vaca pitched both games for Hearne, which now leads the league by one game with a 5-2 record.

Investigating Sanitation Conditions Hearne health officer to act police chief inspect city

Dr. T. A. Searcy city health officer and acting Chief of Police R. L. Perkins examined general sanitation conditions in Hearne this week. Offenders who neglected the city's sanitation code were notified and warned fines will follow if conditions are not corrected under city ordinance.

J P Morris Killed In Farm Accident At Shiloh

J P Morris a 48 year old farmer and rancher of Shiloh was found dead at 3 PM on his farm after his mower struck a stump and threw him under the sickle. Funeral at Shiloh Baptist Church with Rev Bland Watson. Burial in Plainview Cemetery near Normangee. He is survived by his wife two daughters three sons and six grandchildren along with his parents two sisters and three brothers.

Gospel Meet at Church of Christ in Hearne

A gospel meeting will be held at the Hearne Church of Christ from July 9 to July 16 with E. Lewis Case, a former minister, as evangelist. Services start nightly at 7 30 and Sunday at 10 45. Lynn Huff, the church's minister, invites the public to attend any meeting.
