Four Men Killed In Three Accidents Friday

Four area men died in three unrelated Friday accidents on June 25. Jessie Juarez and Guad alupe Alvarado Jr., cousins, perished in a 6 a.m. Tyler crash with a logging truck when the car driver apparently fell asleep. Leon Moore, 57, of San Antonio and formerly Hearne, was struck by a train at 5:20 p.m. near Southern Pacific yards and died at Robertson County Community Hospital. Ludvik Matula, 70, of Gause was killed in a tractor shredder incident on his farm two miles west of Gause near Highway 79 after entangling with the blade when he jumped from the tractor as it caught fire.

Free Immunizations for Children at Hearne Center

Immunizations against tetanus diphtheria whooping cough polio measles and rubella will be given free to children two months and older on Wednesday July 7 from 10 a m to 12 noon at the Hearne Community Center on Davis Street. An official from the Texas Department of Health notes ongoing illness and deaths and urges parents not to delay and to visit their physician or attend the clinic.

Easterly Cemetery Meeting Saturday, July 3 at Easterly Church

The Easterly Cemetery Association will hold its annual meeting on Saturday at 2 p m in the Easterly Baptist Church. All members and friends are invited to attend.

Hearne Lions Club Installs Officers at Center

The Hearne Lions Club met Tuesday June 22 at the Hearne Community Center for its annual officer installation. Jay Terrell became president succeeding Dick Shear as out going leader. Dr. James Stegall of Bryan led the installation ceremony with Mrs. Leon Meek receiving the door award.

Traffic Department to Relocate to Bryan

The traffic department of the Southwestern Bell Telephone office in Hearne will move to Bryan in the latter part of this year. Bob Faust, unit manager for telephone service in Hearne, Madisonville, and Huntsville, said the relocation will provide better service, relieve floor space, and centralize the operation. The business office will remain at the current location.

Farm Tour Starts in Gause Milam County July 2

The Intensified Farm Planning Program tour begins at Coat's Grocery and Market in Gause at 9 a m on Friday July 2. It includes a corn variety demonstration on the Brown Ely and Sons Passa farm and ends with a watermelon cut at L R Simons farm. County agent John E Snell urges all interested cooperators to attend and view IFPP progress.

Three Arrested On Gun Charge In Hearne

Hearne residents two women and a man were arrested by city police at about 1:15 am on Monday, June 28, for handgun related offenses. A woman faced rudely displaying no firearm in public while the man and the other woman were charged with possession of a prohibited weapon. Charges were filed in City Court. Chief BE HO McCoslin said no shots were fired and there were no injuries. All three suspects are in their 20s and were arrested simultaneously.

Hearne City Council Approves Substation Transformer Plans

The Hearne city council on June 28 authorized City Engineer Jim Harless to draft plans and specs for a 10,000 kvp transformer at the northern substation as power demand grows seven percent yearly. The meeting also revised employee sick and vacation leave, authorized $3,000 in revenue sharing to two humanitarian groups, and approved grants for a neighborhood center and transportation costs. Unrelated items included street program delays due to rain, audit negotiations with Edward Slovacek, engine repairs plans with Fairbanks Morse, and postponement of local sales tax suit authorization to July 12 pending legal counsel input.

Hit And Run Accident Near Hearne Injures Teens

A Friday near Hearne saw a one car hit and run wreck with minor injuries to James Green 23 and a separate two vehicle crash on FM 391 injuring two 16 year olds Randy Woolsey and Roland Padgett. DPS patrolmen reported no serious injuries.

Brazos Valley Council Names Advisory Committee Heads

Brazos Valley Development Council executive committee met last Thursday and appointed Milton Aalen Hearne Dean Breitinger Burleson County Rev Hume Reeves Grimes County W T McDonald Jr Brazos County Mayor Lloyd Joyce Bryan Roscoe Bayless Madison County Harley Roath Brazos County Arnold Wedlitz Brazos County as advisory committee chairs. The panel reviewed a 235,766 conversion grant for the Brazos Valley Mental Health Center to fund two years of services for children and the elderly. A 610,010 summer youth recreation request was noted for BVYDC manpower. The program aims to provide activities for economically disadvantaged youth in all seven counties, funded by the Community Services Administration and the Texas Dept of Community Affairs. They also reviewed plans for an 8 sewage treatment plant project with an even review.

Let Freedom Ring an American Bicentennial celebration open to the public will run 2 to 4 p m Sunday July 4 at Fireman s Hall. Rev David McNeely organizer says the town should unite with patriotic and religious music a guest speaker from Houston Police Captain J M LeVrier and Mayor Guy E Chandler to address unity and community. A time capsule idea may be added for 100 years future commemoration containing 1976 newspapers photos and program details.

Booger Bunch Defeats Bryan in 19-5 Softball Win

Booger County Bunch defeated Bryan Green Machine 19 to 5 Sunday at Hearne Lions Club Little League diamond. The win improves their record to 6 1. Bunch travels to Jewett Wednesday for a return game and may meet Madisonville later. Previously they beat Jewett Hangers 24 to 10 at Leon Consolidated School on June 21 and Jewett Giants 15 to 1 on June 24 at New Baden. Coach Bobby Holler of Franklin leads the team with assistant George D Hughes of New Baden.
