Eagle Basketball Team Wins Three, Loses One

Hearne varsity basketball went 3-1 in overtime over two weeks, standing 4-1 in district and 15-9 overall. Milton Johnson led Hearne with 11 points in a 44-39 win at Pflugerville, while Rockdale beat them 50-41 in OT. Davis led scoring in several games, with Hammond and Clayton contributing. Upcoming games include Elgin, Rosebud Lott, and Cameron with varied results and start times.

Hearne PTA Meeting Hosts Busy January 17

The Hearne Parent Teacher Association met at 7 p m Monday January 17 in the high school cafetorium with Mrs Dick Shear presiding. Awards went to first grade East Side School and fifth grade North Side School eighth grade Junior High and 11th grade High School. A program by Girl Scout Brownie Troop 162 included colors and pledge. A progress report on 1100 box tops collected for playground equipment was given, with more needed through March. The spring carnival moved to May 7. A self study for the Texas Education Agency was discussed. Officers for 1977-78 were elected: Mrs Craig Hawthorne president, Mrs Pete Brien Jr Mrs Bill Evans Jr and Mrs George Sisson vice presidents, and Mrs Shear parliamentarian. The next meeting is March 21 with a science display and Girls State speaker.

Future Homemakers In Monthly Meeting Hearne Junior High

The Future Homemakers of America at Hearne Junior High met in the home economics department at 7 30 am on Thursday January 13 for a regular meeting. Awards were given to Myrtle Stewart for collecting the most eyeglasses and cancelled stamps and to Suzanne Benarden for most cancelled stamps. Jack Brooks spoke on Value Clarification and club officers outlined upcoming activities. Members present included Dorothy Accurso Suzanne Hopeus Amy Shear Myrtle Stewart and many others.

Aliens Urged to Report Addresses by January Deadline

Joe F. Staley of the San Antonio Immigration and Naturalization Service urges all aliens to report their addresses during January. Cards are available at Post Offices and INS offices nationwide. Reports must include a 13 cent stamp. Parents must submit for alien children under 14. Willful failure to report may lead to serious penalties.

Baptists Meet Tuesday for Robertson County Association

The Robertson County Baptist Association monthly worker conference will convene Tuesday night January 25 at First Baptist Church Hearne. Dr. Joe W. Bailey presides, with 6:30 p.m. meal, 7 p.m. board and WMA, 7:30 p.m. program led by Charles Luster, scripture by Rev Dean Palmer, and a report on Sunday School Action Program by Rev Bob Wimberly. Dr. Dwight Dudley, pastor Hearne First Baptist, delivers closing message. Public encouraged to attend.

Inaugural Prayer Breakfast at Hearne First Baptist

The inaugural Prayer-Breakfast will be at 7 30 a m Thursday January 20 at the First Baptist Church of Hearne. Mayor Guy E Chandler will preside with elected city officials and ministers recognized. Hearne High Names Five Students to Who's Who

Five Hearne High School juniors and seniors have been approved for publication in the 10th annual Who's Who Among American High School Students. The honorees are Debra Cargill, Karen Franks, Diana Reistino, Dianna Donaldson, and Cheryl Iglay. The national distinction honors leaders in academics athletics extracurriculars or community service and is earned by under four percent of U S students.

Historians In First Meeting of Robertson County Commission

The Robertson County Historical Commission held its first meeting Friday January 14 at the Calvert Arts and Crafts building to receive reports from the membership and finance chairmen and plan the year’s first session. Attendees included Dr. Joe W. Bailey chairing, Phil Atkins vice chair, Willie Gibson treasurer, Douglas McCrary finance chair, Mattie Pickle membership chair, and Reba Alsup secretary. The year’s first official meeting is set for 7 p.m. Wednesday January 26 at the County Museum with Atkins and Mrs Eugene Gibson Jr hosting.

Water Supply Corp Elects 1977 Officers

The Bethany-Hearne Water Supply Corporation held its annual meeting January 11 in the Bethany Baptist Church annex to elect officers and directors for 1977. Harry Young was named president, Emma Kate White vice president, Martha Ann Harris Jr. secretary treasurer, with Ken Stone and Bryan Browning Jr. as directors.

Road Improvements Heard By Commissioners Court

Robertson County Commissioners discussed Big Eight Restoration Program funded since 1975 to repair erosion on county roads, proposing $500,000 over five years with 80 percent funded by the program. They approved a $48,734 motorgrader and debated salaries, noting grant support and potential budget cuts to avoid tax increases. The court will decide on Big Eight and related spending.

RCAARC Elects 1977 Officers

Robertson County Area Association for Retarded Citizens elected new officers for 1977. Mrs. James Florence remains president and Mrs. S. M. Lockhart as vice president. New secretary is Mrs. Milton Aalen and Mrs. B. K. Doherty becomes treasurer. Odis A Hoyt joins the Board of Directors along with continuing directors Mrs. L. A. Stephenson and Dr. Henry Benarden. A slide program on Education for the Handicapped by Mrs. Lockhart was presented. The group voted to meet every other month and next meets the first Monday in March. The annual membership drive is underway with contact to Mrs. Jack Lyons. Florence, J W Perry, and C E Brown Jr attended lectures in Bryan January 19-14 on mental retardation ideas.

Girl Scouts Cookie Sale Dates Announced in Texas

The annual cookie sale runs from Friday January 28 to Saturday February 5 with about 6000 Girl Scouts across 13 central Texas counties offering six cookie varieties. Proceeds fund council camps including Camp Kachina Lake Belton Camp Howdy Bryan and Camp Adair Hill County.

The Green Thumb Garden Club will hold an Arbor Day program on January 21 at 4 p.m. in Memorial Garden, the new addition to Norwood Cemetery. Two new mimosa trees will be planted along with replacements for trees that have died.

Hearne School Board awards contract for new high school rooms

The Hearne School Board awarded a contract to Sentry Construction Company of Bryan for four regular classrooms one science room and related work at the high school campus. Five bids were submitted with Sentry the low bidder at 174403. Work to begin promptly and span about 100 working days pending weather. resignations noted for J O Robertson band director and Florence Sparks math teacher. William Burney hired as band director and Christi Colquinquent as mathematics teacher.
