Judge W. Davis opened the January term at Franklin Monday morning and swore in a new grand jury with Joe Gibson named foreman. The old docket was set to Tuesday for five weeks of cases, praising Robertson County’s record of low crime and promising cooperation with incoming officials to ensure swift justice.
Hearne Baptist Church hosts a workers meeting on Tuesday January 10 at 10 a.m. The program includes a long service devotional devotional led by Mrs J L Wallace WWis C F Drury a spiritual awakening by Rev J E Merrill a Life Problems talk by Mrs W S Hoyt Jr a round table discussion led by Rev C E Bullock a sermon by Rev W C Wright Caldwell lunch at noon Ladies Worker and Layner s Work at 1 15 p m Prohibition question discussion led by Rev J L Wallace and a closing address by Rev E L Springer at 3 15 p m.
The Parent-Teacher Association met in regular session Tuesday afternoon with Mrs. R. H. Ballinger presiding. A program on Thrift and Character Training, presented by the Shakespeare Club by invitation of the P. T. A. committee, featured songs, prayers, and piano numbers. Reports on the diphtheria immunization campaign were given and January 19 was noted as Visiting Day.
Hearne Rotary Club held a noon session at the Oxford Hotel with members outlining six months of programs. Secretary R H Mallard was asked to donate $100 each to the Parent Teacher Association milk fund and the Community Chest. Mrs Bland and oO served as ex cherts as attendance stayed strong and plans for 1933 were framed.
New Year’s Day services at Hearne churches brought reconsecration and renewed hope. Rev. C. E. Bullock preached at the Baptist church on Consecration and its Results from Exodus 40 34. Euell Porter soloed The Good Shepherd with Mrs. O. C. Pullen assisting. Methodist brief address by Dr. E. W. Solomon preceded Communion. Mrs. F. K. C. Karney played organ. St Philip’s Episcopal held an parish meeting in the evening. Mass at St Mary’s at 7 30 a m. Congregations were large despite flu in many families.
After a New Year’s Eve buffet supper at the home of Mr. and Mrs. R. O. Ely, hosts Messrs. Bill Keienberg Bob Ziegler Sid Finley and Howard Fox led guests to a Calvert Country Club dance. The Ely residence was decorated with seasonal flowers and Christmas greens for the holiday season. Out-of-town guests included Mrs. Frank Anderson of New York City and Miss Grace Stephens of Dallas.
Mrs Ely Hardcastle is under treatment for a broken hip socket after a fall during morning milking Tuesday. Her husband described the accident as a calfing cow kicked him and knocked her to the ground while she moved to avoid the animal. She rests as comfortably as possible under the circumstances.
Grady Griffin ten year old son of Mrs Maggie Griffin of Hearne East sustained a break of the right leg just below the hip after a fall from a truck Monday afternoon. Hearne physician provided first aid and he was taken to Bryan hospital for further treatment and is resting comfortably.
At the January 2 meeting of St. Philip's Auxiliary members elected officers for the ensuing year. President is Mrs. A.R. Weeks, Vice President Mrs. George Chatmas, Treasurer Mrs. W. D. Henson, Secretary Mrs. R W. Marshall, Supply Chairman Miss Frances Wilkerson, Education Chairman Mrs. W. A. Wilkerson, Diocesan Chairman Mrs. B. W. Brashear.
A meeting of the Woman's Benefit Association is set for Friday afternoon January 6 from 3 to 4. All members are urged to attend for the election of officers and related matters.
Mrs. Clara Rozzelle formerly of Mumford died last Sunday at the family home in Houston. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday in the Foyle West chapel with E. D. Head officiating. Burial was in Rosewood Park Cemetery. Active pallbearers included W. Bates and D. J. Henderson. Survived by daughter Merle Rozzelle and son Raymond of Houston, sister Mrs. H. B. Gatling of Shreveport, brother J. F. Taylor of Beaumont, and father P. G. Taylor of Mumford. The Rozzelle family long tied to Robertson county and Mumford.
A New Year verse bids farewell to 1932 and welcomes 1933. The poet, Rhyming Rufus, laments low fortunes yet remains hopeful, promising weekly cheer and a friendly greeting as the year turns. The tone is playful and nostalgic, with wishes for luck in 1934.
Mary Dell Wood entertained a small group of friends Friday night at the home of her parents Mr and Mrs Fred Wood. Guests included Alice Brady Areal Martha Mc Camy Nella June Hamilton Jane Self Jack Mathews Demet Palmos Volney Stubbs and Punch and cake were served.
Funeral services for Bettie Beverly aged seventy two were held at the home of her son-in-law and daughter Mr. and Mrs. Sam Butts Jr in Bethany. Rev J W Rawls officiated and burial followed in Bethany cemetery. She is survived by four daughters and two sons. A Mississippi native, she lived in Texas for years and had resided with her son-in-law since moving from Dayton five months ago. She was a member of the Free Will Baptist church.
Dallas News notes a fifty year anniversary for B. J. Shaw and Miss Kittie Lindal, daughter of Judge Lindal, who wed in Hearne on New Year’s Day 1882. The item recalls their marriage as recorded in a Dallas and State column.
Jack Burney lies in bed at his parents home after a fall in a high school shower room left him with a head contusion and facial injuries. He could not recall how the accident happened, his lip torn by a tooth as he struck the concrete floor, and friends and teachers wish him a speedy recovery.
Final rites were held Friday at the Methodist church for Mrs. M L Shoap who died Wednesday in Wink. The service followed calling hours at Creed Funeral Home with honor by pallbearers and burial at Norwood Cemetery. Survivors include three sons John Henry Marion a daughter Ruth Shoap two sisters and three brothers.
Winifred Maurice, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald McLeroy, born just before the New Year, has nine living grandparents. Fulfilling a large clan, on the mother’s side are L. T. Self and J. A. Peel, Hearne and Port Sullivan relatives. On the father’s side are W. W. McLeroy, Hearne, and H. H. Melton, Franklin, with Jane McLeroy, Hearne, as a great grandmother. Winifred Maurice is the tenth great grandchild of the Melton family. Numerous uncles and aunts also abound to help care for him.
New Year arrived quietly in Hearne as whistles and bells were silent. A few gunshots and scattered fireworks occurred, but most celebrations paused due to illness in several homes, including a father in one case. The calm reflected hopefulness despite health concerns.
The January 2 special session of the Commissioners' Court accepted bonds and oaths of office for newly elected officials following the summer primary and November general election. Claude B. Carter became County Judge, succeeding eight-year veteran Joe Y. McNutt. New officers include John B. Grace as County Attorney, W. A. Nickelson Sheriff, James W. Blackmon County Tax Collector, Mrs. John B. Frazier County Treasurer, and Carter himself as Judge. Existing officers remained, with several re-elected terms continuing. The editor commends the officials and confidence in county governance.
Three colored citizens of Hearne died within ten days. Eliza Parker aged 90, Becky Smith over 100, and Simeon Miller 91. Parker died December 30 and was buried at New Elam church. Smith died December 27 and wasn’t a Hearne resident. Miller, a preacher and paper hanger, long worked and supported his race, with white citizens employing him when able. Georgian Kenny, age 81, moved to Hearne years ago and left six sons and three daughters.
Preachers of the Marlin district gather at the Methodist church for an all day institute led by Rev. E. L. Ingram presiding elder. Lunch will be served in the basement by local women’s societies to fifty or more attendees.
