Weekend Highway Fatality Brings County Total To Nine

James L. Nicholson of Port Arthur died in a Temple hospital December 31 from injuries after his car overturned in Robertson County on Saturday December 30. Robertson County tally reached nine traffic fatalities for 1961, with six during the Christmas New Year period, the highest since 1955. The accident occurred 1.6 miles east of New Baden on Farm Market Road 1940 at 7:30 p.m. Nicholson and his wife Joyce Ann, 18, were en route to New Baden to visit family. Nicholson, 21, lost control on a curve, the car left the road, rolled two and a half times, and both were thrown out. Nicholson died after transfer to Temple. Joyce Ann remained hospitalized in Hearne, listed as in fine condition and expected home soon. Funeral services for Nicholson were held in Port Arthur. He is survived by his wife, parents Herbert and Mrs. Nicholson, a brother Carroll Dean Nicholson, and his grandparents Mr. and Mrs. A. Nicholson of New Baden.

Death Claims Seth R Oliver

Seth Robert Oliver died in Rusk on Tuesday January 2 after a long illness. He was born in Hearne on October 28 1886 and was 75 years two months and five days old. He owned a store near Calvert with his sister and had made his home there after Hearne years. Funeral services were held January 4 at 3 p m from Heartfield Funeral Home with Rev Cecil McBeth officiating. Interment was in Norwood Cemetery. Pallbearers were Raymond Yates James Jones Sam Mounts L W Neu mann W S Hoyt Jr and Carl Anchicks. He is survived by a brother W Lynn Oliver of Hearne five sisters Mrs R A Hartman of Hearne Mrs Cary Woodall and Mrs Anna Meyers of Calvert Mrs M H Gaffney and Mrs H W James of Houston.

The Hearne Volunteer Fire Department answered 20 fire alarms during the week. They were called to the S P Railroad to extinguish a fire in a cotton loaded car and handled 19 grass fire calls within city limits.

County costs outlined for Hearne area highway project

Robertson County officials and Hearne city representatives discussed state highway department plans for Highway 79 and 6 at City Hall. The total county share was put at 74825 with Hearne city costs at 140000. construction costs to be funded by the state except for curb and storm sewer needs. An overpass is planned over Pacific tracks with an interchange on the new 1.2 mile western extension from Highway 79 to north Hearne on Highway 6.
