Weekend Highway Fatality Brings County Total To Nine
James L. Nicholson of Port Arthur died in a Temple hospital December 31 from injuries after his car overturned in Robertson County on Saturday December 30. Robertson County tally reached nine traffic fatalities for 1961, with six during the Christmas New Year period, the highest since 1955. The accident occurred 1.6 miles east of New Baden on Farm Market Road 1940 at 7:30 p.m. Nicholson and his wife Joyce Ann, 18, were en route to New Baden to visit family. Nicholson, 21, lost control on a curve, the car left the road, rolled two and a half times, and both were thrown out. Nicholson died after transfer to Temple. Joyce Ann remained hospitalized in Hearne, listed as in fine condition and expected home soon. Funeral services for Nicholson were held in Port Arthur. He is survived by his wife, parents Herbert and Mrs. Nicholson, a brother Carroll Dean Nicholson, and his grandparents Mr. and Mrs. A. Nicholson of New Baden.

Seth Robert Oliver died in Rusk on Tuesday January 2 after a long illness. He was born in Hearne on October 28 1886 and was 75 years two months and five days old. He owned a store near Calvert with his sister and had made his home there after Hearne years. Funeral services were held January 4 at 3 p m from Heartfield Funeral Home with Rev Cecil McBeth officiating. Interment was in Norwood Cemetery.
