Hearne friends were notified last weekend of the death of Mrs. Bea Burkhart of Perry Iowa. She was the mother of Mrs. Calvin Armstong whose husband is a former resident of the Five Points community and attended Hearne schools.
Mrs Phil Snell is a patient in a Marlin hospital. The note records her hospitalization status and location within the facility.
Robertson County Agent Harry Smith announces an important meeting for all livestock producers to be held at Franklin Elementary School Auditorium on Wednesday January 10 at 7 30 p m The session will cover the state wide screw worm eradication program sponsored by the Southwest Animal Research Foundation Dr C M Patterson State Extension Veterinarian will outline completed research and future work and a county committee will be elected at the meeting all livestock producers are urged to attend.

James L. Nicholson of Port Arthur died in a Temple hospital December 31 from injuries after his car overturned in Robertson County on Saturday December 30. Robertson County tally reached nine traffic fatalities for 1961, with six during the Christmas New Year period, the highest since 1955. The accident occurred 1.6 miles east of New Baden on Farm Market Road 1940 at 7:30 p.m. Nicholson and his wife Joyce Ann, 18, were en route to New Baden to visit family. Nicholson, 21, lost control on a curve, the car left the road, rolled two and a half times, and both were thrown out. Nicholson died after transfer to Temple. Joyce Ann remained hospitalized in Hearne, listed as in fine condition and expected home soon. Funeral services for Nicholson were held in Port Arthur. He is survived by his wife, parents Herbert and Mrs. Nicholson, a brother Carroll Dean Nicholson, and his grandparents Mr. and Mrs. A. Nicholson of New Baden.
Herman Yezak Dean of the Texas House announces candidacy for re election to State Representative Burleson Milam and Robertson Counties in the Democratic Primary May 1962. District No 45 formed from 1960 census districts. Yezak has served since 1944, five decades of service, with Army Reserve duties and prior wartime service.
Hearne crushed Franklin 63 32 on Franklin home floor Tuesday to move into the Navasota tournament set for January 4 5 6. Key second quarter scoring from Gary O Neal Tommy Dotson and Dick Dolney built a safe lead as the Eagles dominated. Franklin without Paul Smith due to tonsil surgery led by Kenny Reinhardt. In B game Franklin fell 60 7. Hearne to open NavaSota tourney against Snook Thursday at 8 30 pm with potential later games Friday depending on results.
Democrat announces Joe C Willis of Bremond as candidate for Robertson County District Clerk in the Democratic primary next May. Willis seeks the post held by Morgan Harlan who will retire. Born in Franklin, 1939 Franklin High School graduate, Navy veteran, married to Jane Mathews Hearne with three children. Employed by Central Texas Hardware Bryan. Member of Baptist Church and Masonic Lodge. Plans to visit voters widely to gain support.
Gervase D Reagan formally announces his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for Robertson County Texas County Judge. He notes he is a lifelong Democrat, a native of the county, married to Kittie Faye Lopez with two daughters, and lists his background in farming ranching a service station and dirt timber contracting. He expresses his desire to meet voters and asks for their vote.
Mr and Mrs Vernon Kerns traveled to Dallas for the National Rodeo Finals where Kerns finished in fourth place. Sharon and LaVerne Kerns stayed in Ennis as guests of Mr and Mrs RD Kerns while their parents attended the finals.

Hearne city figures show total building permits for 1961 at 202135, down from 205252 in 1960. The year produced 35 new homes costing 99875 and 135 residential remodels at 66153, plus 36407 for commercial construction. Peak month August with 42640 permits. December lowest at 350.
Seth Robert Oliver died in Rusk on Tuesday January 2 after a long illness. He was born in Hearne on October 28 1886 and was 75 years two months and five days old. He owned a store near Calvert with his sister and had made his home there after Hearne years. Funeral services were held January 4 at 3 p m from Heartfield Funeral Home with Rev Cecil McBeth officiating. Interment was in Norwood Cemetery. Pallbearers were Raymond Yates James Jones Sam Mounts L W Neu mann W S Hoyt Jr and Carl Anchicks. He is survived by a brother W Lynn Oliver of Hearne five sisters Mrs R A Hartman of Hearne Mrs Cary Woodall and Mrs Anna Meyers of Calvert Mrs M H Gaffney and Mrs H W James of Houston.
The Hearne Volunteer Fire Department answered 20 fire alarms during the week. They were called to the S P Railroad to extinguish a fire in a cotton loaded car and handled 19 grass fire calls within city limits.
Hearne Independent School District will run its annual census from January 8 through January 31 to project new enrollments for September 1962. Superintendent G G Grant notes data for six year olds and siblings already in Hearne Public Schools. parents of others should contact East Side Elementary principal M D Barkley or Blackshear School principal B C Murray during the census window.

Robertson County officials and Hearne city representatives discussed state highway department plans for Highway 79 and 6 at City Hall. The total county share was put at 74825 with Hearne city costs at 140000. construction costs to be funded by the state except for curb and storm sewer needs. An overpass is planned over Pacific tracks with an interchange on the new 1.2 mile western extension from Highway 79 to north Hearne on Highway 6.
The Hearne Quarterback Club plans recognition for standout quarterback J Bridgers. The event highlights his leadership on the Hearne football team and is set to celebrate his contributions to the program.
