Burleson Killed Instantly In Train-Pickup Collision

Hearne police report 57 year old L C Burleson was killed December 24 when his pickup struck a Missouri Pacific freight train at a crossing outside the east city limits. The engineer was W C Wilbanks and conductor Ross Cunningham. The 1952 Chevrolet was crushed, Burleson’s body thrown 59 feet. Burleson, a sewer department employee since October 25, 1963, died at the scene.

Jimmy Blair Is In England on Air Force Duty

T/Sgt. Jimmy M. Blair serves as administrative supervisor in USAFE at Mildenhall RAF Station England. He previously posted at Barksdale AFB Louisiana. A Franklin High School graduate he is the son of Mr and Mrs Herman Blair of Franklin and is married to Doreen M Knapp from England.

Eagle Basketball Triumphs and Tournament Exit

Hearne Eagle roundballers finish 13-5 after beating Franklin 89-28 and Hempstead 75-57 while dropping to Somerville 60-55. Robert White totaled 64 points in those three games, John Wilson 61. A&M Tournament at College Station ended with a 53-45 loss to A&M. White earned the tournament trophy. Varsity beat Franklin 89-28 and B team 66-22 on December 17, with White 23 and Wilson 21 leading scoring. B team Leslie Herrell 14, James Brown 13, Robert Reistino 11.

The Hearne Chamber of Commerce closing committee recommends observing New Year's Day on Wednesday January 1. Hearne Post Office, Hearne Building and Loan, First State Bank, Plant ers and Merchants State Bank, City of Hearne, and other firms notify they will be closed. The Democrat published a day early so staff could enjoy the holiday.

Hearne Schools Reopen Monday After Christmas Break

All Hearne schools will reopen Monday January 6 following a two week Christmas vacation for students. Classes will run on the regular schedule, cafeterias will be open, and buses will operate as usual.

Whatley Arrives For New Duty At McClellan AFB

Airman William C. Whatley has arrived for duty at McClellan AFB in Sacramento California. He is a radio operator assigned to a unit of the Aerospace Defense Command and previously served at Korat Royal Thai AFB Thailand. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Wiley S Whatley of Franklin Texas and a 1966 graduate of Jesse H Jones High School in Houston.

Sgt Peters Visits Miss Barnett Over Christmas

Sgt Randall Vern Peters of Fort Hood visited Miss Shirley Barnett at her parents home on December 24 25 26. They are now visiting his mother Mrs Vern Peters in Searcy Arkansas. He is scheduled to leave later in the month for duty with the Army in Vietnam.

Building Permit Totals For 1968 Show Healthy Increase

Hearne building activity rose in 1968 with total permits reaching $267,101 in 1966 and $471,312 in 1965, while 1968 permits totaled $337,872 for new construction, repairs and additions. The year saw 17 new homes worth $290,000 and a $410,000 Lifetime Doors of Texas building near Hearne. Postmaster Barkley announced a January 1 1969 second class rate hike affecting newspapers magazines and other mailings.

Hearnites Enjoy European Reunion Before Christmas

Mrs Dele Edmonds, former Sera Sue Wilson, and Joseph Cotropia, Hearnite alums from Siam days through UT, reunited in Bucharest Romania during European tour. Dr Edmonds teaches English at Spantighe Bucharest on Fulbright. Cotropia teaches biology and chemistry at the American School in Legally Switzerland. Plans include Istanbul and Vienne visits.

Suspected Burglars Shot In Leg By City Policeman

A Hearne police officer shot Charles Walker after Walker tried to kick in a front window on Fourth Street early Sunday. Walker fled across railroad tracks, was captured at the Southern Pacific roundhouse, treated by a local physician, then jailed. He was later transferred to Franklin County jail to await Robertson County Grand Jury action.
