Escape From Wreck Leaves Family Injured

Mrs J B Birdwell Jr and her children Bill and Betty narrowly escaped serious injuries when their car collided with a pickup driven by Mr Goodson of Houston at the intersection of highways 79 and 75 in Buffalo. All were treated for cuts and bruises at a Teague hospital and released. Bill Birdwell suffered a fractured collar bone.

Capt Ernest Herod Hospitalized With Heart Ailment

Capt Ernest Herod, recently retired from the U S Air Force, was hospitalized Sunday for a heart ailment and was resting comfortably Wednesday. He and his family had moved to Hearne.

Services Held For R. L. Morris

Funeral services for Robert Lee Morris were held at Calvert Baptist Church on Saturday December 26 at 10 a m with Rev Cecil McBeth officiating. Interment followed at Sunnyside Cemetery under Heartfield Funeral Home direction. Pallbearers were Alton Gandy Malcolm Gandy J D Gandy Charles Davis Herbert R Johnson and Bill Johnson Jr. Morris died in a Marlin hospital December 22 at age 79 years six months 13 days. Surviving are two sons Lt Col Tom Morris of Florida M Sgt Sam Morris of Alaska three grandchildren a brother Robin Morris of Childress and three sisters Mrs Avie Cadle of Franklin Mrs Jesse Davis and Mrs Loda Gandy of Hearne.

Franklin Man Passes Away

Franklin Moyers 64 died Sunday night en route to Hearne hospital after 41 years with Gulf Oil. He moved to Franklin from Port Arthur four months ago. Funeral Tuesday at Franklin Baptist Church with Rev. Monk Whitson. Burial in Franklin cemetery. Survived by widow, a son Roland Moyers of Rock Springs, one grandson, a brother Hershel Moyers of Fort Worth, and two sisters Mrs. J. E. White of Houston and Mrs. Ethel Thomas of Richard.

Former Resident R. S. Brown Dies at 75 in San Antonio

R. S. Brown aged 75 died Sunday in a San Antonio hospital after a short illness. A former Hearne resident and Southern Pacific railroad man, he was a graduate of A&M College and active in Masonic work. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Frank Jenkins of New Orleans.

Hearne Businesses Close To Welcome New Year

The Hearne Chamber of Commerce says nearly all Hearne businesses will close Friday January 1 for New Year observance. The holiday is set by the chamber’s holiday committee. Also closing are Hearne Building and Loan Association Planters and Merchants State Bank First State Bank Hearne Post Office and Hearne City Hall.

Classes in all Hearne schools resume Monday morning on the regular schedule per Supt. M E Jones. Students were dismissed Friday December 18 for Christmas holidays.

Bryan Rites For Mrs. M. Maloney

Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Rohde Maloney were held at the First Baptist Church in Bryan with Dr. W. H. Andrew officiating. Burial was in Bryan City Cemetery. Pallbearers included Seldon Ellis Adrian Griffin C. M. Hassell Ben Trotter Ervin B. Conway and Fred McGilberry. Hubert C. Lyon Dies in Terrell Ex-Superintendent of Hearne Schools

Hubert C. Lyon 176, former superintendent of Hearne Public Schools, died in a Terrell hospital after a brief illness. His funeral was held Tuesday morning in a Terrell funeral home. He is survived by his wife two sons five grandchildren and two brothers.

Graveside services for John C. Lumpkin of Dallas were held at Norwood Cemetery Tuesday afternoon with Masons in charge. Earlier services were held in Temple Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. He succumbed Sunday morning in a Temple hospital after a long illness. Born in Hearne on March 14, 1893, he was 66 at death. Lumpkin was assistant to the vice president and general manager of the Union Terminal in Dallas, a Baptist Church member, and World War I veteran. survived by wife and several nieces and nephews.

Heart patient steadily improving at hospital

Mrs. Charles Ferrera, hospitalized last week after a heart attack, is said to be steadily improving. Doctors expect she will be able to return home after the first of the year.

Social Security Tax Increase Planned for 1960

Holly E. Rees, manager of the Bryan social security district, announced tax changes starting January 1, 1960. Employee and employer rates rise to 3 percent each, self employed at 4 percent, on the first 4800 dollars of earnings, replacing the current 2 4 percent for wage earners and employers and 3 percent for self employed. The program funds over 13 million beneficiaries with about 800 million in monthly benefits, underscoring its role in retirement disability and survivor protection for Americans.
