Education Program To Survey Hearne Residents Feb 21 25

Hearne Community Education Program conducts a week long survey from February 21 to 25 to gauge interest in recreation and enrichment classes for March. Some 45 volunteers will visit homes. names on tags bear a letter from Dr. Henry J. Benarden.

High School FHA Drives to Aid Community and Kidney Patient

Hearne High School's Future Homemakers of America is launching three charity drives. One, Years For Profit, sends members to centers to aid citizens. They will collect cancelled stamps, eyeglass frames for the State Welfare Depart­ment. A second drive helps a girl needing kidney transplant treatment. The group prizes the top collector of computer markings from canned goods labels with $5.00.

Hearne School Board sets April 2 trustee election for two seats, with Cotropia and Mrs. Russ seeking re election. Polls open 7 a m to 7 p m at Hearne Fire Station and Benchley Junior High. Other actions include staff changes, 179 school days, and facility and equipment updates.

County Clerks Set March Seminar in College Station

County and district clerks from across Texas will attend the fifth annual Seminar in College Station March 1 to 3 at the Ramada Inn. Events include addresses by Dr. Daniel Pfannstiel and Mark White, sessions on records, taxes, probate, criminal costs, grand juries, and a banquet with Dr. James Blakely. A joint session will cover retirement and county government futures. Ray Hardy of Harris County serves as association president.

Senator Moore Pushes Bill to Restrict Bank Moves

Sen William T Moore of Bryan advances SB 456 in Senate State Affairs to bar banks from relocating outside their original county. He notes a Hearne to Bryan College Station move would reduce local banking for 5000 residents and cites a pending lawsuit. The bill would allow within county moves with State Banking Board approval.

Comptroller Bob Bullock released figures showing Robertson County commerce rose in 1976 over 1975. Hearne collected 96,908.25 dollars from the one percent sales tax in 1976 versus 80,407.08 in 1975, a two percent gain. Calvert topped 18,401.63, up from 13,000.30. Franklin rose 30 percent to 15,454.53 from 11,899.67. Bremond increased six percent to 12,104.27 from 11,371.29.

City Police Beat: DUI and Disorderly Conduct Arrests

The highway patrol jailed one man in city jail on charges of driving while intoxicated last week. Police jailed two men on disorderly conduct charges and one on a traffic violation. Charges were filed against two in justice court for burglary of a North Side tavern and two others were charged with misdemeanor theft.

Student Council to Screen Airport at Hearne High Gym

Hearne High School will host a single movie showing of Airport in the school gym on Thursday night February 24 at seven oclock. A minimal admission will be charged and free snacks provided. The event, sponsored by the Student Council, marks the end of the quarter final examinations.

Local Controller Finishes Course at A M University

David White city of Hearne completed the final session of a two part municipal accounting course at A M University on February 10 11. Instructors were Dr Larry G Pointer and Dr George C Fowler. Other towns represented included Breckenridge Highland Park Brookshire Oyster Creek Village Hunters Creek Village Spearman Navasota Normangee Elsa and College Station.

Bailey retires from ALCOA Rockdale potroom

Potroom supervisor W. Blake Bailey of Gause retires from Aluminum Company of America Rockdale Works on February 1 after a long career in the potroom department. Bailey joined ALCOA in 1953, became line supervisor in 1956 and was named supervisor in 1972. He and his wife Wenona have one daughter.

Hearne City Council Sets April 2 Election and Plans

The Hearne City Council approved a city election for Saturday, April 2, with Mayor Guy Chandler and City Attorney Bill Patmos seeking reelection. Alderman Theiss undecided. Bulot may create a vacancy due to transfer. The council also granted Fulton Street inclusion in the Community Development Plan and delayed a water well rebuild to study alternatives. Theis s suggested a timer for pumping and the council authorized timber for golf course bridges and bid plans for a street equipment pickup.

Calvert Beef Short Course Planned February 21 24

A beef production short course will be held at Calvert High School from February 21 through 24 at seven each night. Dr. Krehbiel of A M University will assist cattlemen with problems and on farm instruction. Certificates will be given to attendees who complete all classes. The program covers beef cost reduction, production suited to homemaker demands, reproduction and pregnancy diagnosis, bull and replacement heifer selection, half crop percentages, and winter feeding. Man Faces Murder Charge In Wife Drowning Case

A Bremond man, Dave Cornelius Williams, 52, is jailed in Falls County on a murder charge after his wife Earnest Mae Williams, 51, vanished and was found downstream in the Brazos River. Police say she jumped in near FM 413. a DPS helicopter aided the search, and her body was recovered seven miles downstream. Bond set at $10,000.
