One of Hearne’s most colorful figures was Judge J. Felton Lane a former owner of The Hearne Democrat and longtime attorney. His stories amuse aging residents, including a tale where after a nip he refused water saying a man should not extinguish a fire he started himself.
A speech is interrupted by a heckler shouting louder. The speaker promises a final, cosmic stop when the universe ends and Gabriel blows his trumpet, joking that a small bore jackass will shout louder. Then a series of quips and witticisms follow about life, TV, budgets, and human foibles.
William Thomas Ramby known as Billy Ramby 18 of Marquez died Friday afternoon in an oilfield accident while working as a roughneck for Carter Jones Drilling Co of Kilgore He was on his first day of work Funeral services were at Marquez Baptist Church with Rev L O Leftwich and Rev Carl Bethea officiating Interment followed in Marquez cemetery He was born May 3 1944 in Marquez and was a 1961 Leon Independent High School graduate Survivors include his parents two sisters three brothers and a number of relatives in the area
The children of Mrs. Ira Touchstone gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Willie Woncreck in Rockdale to celebrate her 87th birthday. Attendees included H. C. Touchstone of Bryan, Claude Rodgers of Houston, George Ramsey, Don Rylander and Austin baby, Wiley Kirk of Gause, Gerald Vinton and Gary of Milano, and local Rockdale residents Jim Jones, James Yoakum, Erid Wonoreck, John Westbrook, Larry, and Ira Wonoreck. Mrs. Touchstone remains independent and handles her own housework.
Calvert hosts weekend visitors including Mrs. J O Hucks and Mr. Joe Fulton of Houston. Local families and members attend Lottie Moon Circle, Home Makers Club, P TA, Triple L Class, Sam Alyne Circle, and Calvert W S C S meetings. Tony Bonilla named District 36 state representative. active in law and Latin American groups.
Calvert Cemetery Association will meet Friday February 16 at 3 30 p.m. at the home of Mrs J O Bucks Members are urged to attend.
Mrs. Fred Allday's funeral was held in Houston on February 6 attended by Mrs. J O Hucks Calvert, Mr. and Mrs Carl Allday and Bill Allday. Survived by husband, a former Calvert resident. son Fred Jr of New Orleans. three grandchildren.
