Hammett Confesses To Murder Charge Monday
Sheriff E P Elliott said Hammett William Jack 29 of Denton confessed to killing a man in Brazoria County and sought the death penalty. He allegedly killed a San Antonio man by mistake, thinking him a police officer. Hammett was among four Hearne arrests Jan 19 for marijuana and heroin. Nancy Guillory Bell Houston and Melvin Bell Hearne were adjudged for heroin possession with two year probated terms. a second woman awaits trial.

The dismembered body of Jack Cooney III, 29, of Austin, was found in the Brazos River near Gause on the Ely and Sons Farm on December 2. Police say the credit card company did not flag the account as requested and the card was used five days after the body was found in the lower Rio Grande Valley, prompting renewed investigation by Austin officers and other agencies.

Students To Receive Vision Examinations At North Side
Vision tests will be given to all students at North Side School in Hearne during the week beginning February 7. Parents of students who do not score satisfactorily will be notified by school nurse Ruth Brock to seek professional help. Washington reports 260 Robertson County veterans will share about 25 thousand dollars in dividends from GI and life insurance policies. Most recipients are World War II veterans with National Service Life Insurance. payouts vary by policy. Robertson County Historical Commission met January 31 at Hammond House to discuss the fifth annual Springtime Pilgrimage on April 23. Highway Patrolman Gary Henderson investigated three crashes last week. William M. Elmore of Cameron and Ophelia Jurney of Bay City collided when Elmore slowed to turn. Sonny Green Jr. of Irving and Floyd D. Mattocks of Bryan had a head on impact with Mattocks cited for driving on the wrong side. William C. Burney joined the Hearne school faculty in January as the new band director for the High School and Junior High. A Georgetown High School graduate, he studied at Southwestern University and earned a BA in music education from Southwest Texas State University. He taught band at Falls City from 1974 to 1976 before pursuing a master’s degree at Sam Houston State University.

Advisory Group Holds Meeting at Robertson County Lunch
The Robertson County citizens advisory council for the Central Brazos Valley Mental Health Center met at Robertson's Landing on Monday January 24. President Mrs Johnnie Clark opened the meeting and introduced Ruby Fisher coordinator for follow up care services who outlined duties in the region. Joyce Nixon handles medication follow up in surrounding communities. Mrs Bennie Long proposed a slate with Mrs Clark president Paul Williams vice president and Mrs Long secretary treasurer. A statistical report on CBVMHC patients in surrounding counties was presented by Falkce Klein. Bernice Deily was announced hired as a county mental health worker under CBVMHMR supervision.
