Hammett Confesses To Murder Charge Monday

Sheriff E P Elliott said Hammett William Jack 29 of Denton confessed to killing a man in Brazoria County and sought the death penalty. He allegedly killed a San Antonio man by mistake, thinking him a police officer. Hammett was among four Hearne arrests Jan 19 for marijuana and heroin. Nancy Guillory Bell Houston and Melvin Bell Hearne were adjudged for heroin possession with two year probated terms. a second woman awaits trial.

Credit Card Used After Man Found Dismembered

The dismembered body of Jack Cooney III, 29, of Austin, was found in the Brazos River near Gause on the Ely and Sons Farm on December 2. Police say the credit card company did not flag the account as requested and the card was used five days after the body was found in the lower Rio Grande Valley, prompting renewed investigation by Austin officers and other agencies.

January Was Cold Month Record Cold January Weather

The month of January ranked as exceptionally cold with readings around 14 degrees on multiple mornings and 20 degrees on others. Hearne schools missed one day, Verson All Steel Press and Hearne Steel three production days, General American Transportation one day, and the Municipal Plant bought about 30 percent of January electricity from Brazos Electric Power Cooperative.

Students To Receive Vision Examinations At North Side

Vision tests will be given to all students at North Side School in Hearne during the week beginning February 7. Parents of students who do not score satisfactorily will be notified by school nurse Ruth Brock to seek professional help. Neither the school nor the Hearne PTA sponsoring the testing will be responsible for buying glasses. Some PTA members will assist in testing.

Robertson County Vets Will Receive $25,000

Washington reports 260 Robertson County veterans will share about 25 thousand dollars in dividends from GI and life insurance policies. Most recipients are World War II veterans with National Service Life Insurance. payouts vary by policy. Checks arrive automatically on policy anniversaries with amounts around 203 dollars for World War I vets, 106 dollars for WWI and others, and 22 dollars for most recipients.

Historical Group Hears Tour Plan in Hammond House

Robertson County Historical Commission met January 31 at Hammond House to discuss the fifth annual Springtime Pilgrimage on April 23. Homes on the tour include Oxsheer Cobb, The Blue House at 409 Gregg, Sneed House, Andrew Knapp Snowwhite House, Liere Dairy, and more, with openings 1 to 5 p.m. The museum is open 11 to 5 p.m. with hostesses. Next meeting March 2 at the museum.

St Philip's Episcopal Church resumes regular 10 a.m. Sunday worship effective February 6. The 9 a.m. start had been in place for months to allow Rev. Jim Dannelley to serve Cameron and Rockdale communities lacking a regular priest.

Police Beat Reports Drunk Driving and Pedestrian Arrests

Chief E H McCoslin said in the city beat that in the past ten days highway patrolmen arrested three for driving while intoxicated and jailed them locally. Hearne police also lodged one man in the jail as a drunk pedestrian.

Building and Loan Growth Tells at Hearne Meeting

Hearne Building and Loan Association president Charles C. Miller reported growth for the previous year at the January 20 meeting. Assets rose by 2,136,418 with savings up 2,094,534 and loans up 1,793,506. total dividends reached 645,443 and reserves increased 149,000. The 1976 loan total was 2,761,734 from 97 loans including 25 construction and 50 home purchase loans. Norman Koch was promoted to loan officer after the meeting.

Grace Methodist To Sponsor Show

Grace United Methodist Church in Hearne will sponsor a puppet show in the church sanctuary at 3 p m Saturday February 12. The show, produced by a group from St Pauls United Methodist Church in Bryan, conveys Christian ideals through entertaining skits with contemporary dialogue. No admission will be charged and the general public is invited, said Mrs Roy L Henry coordinator.

Patrolman Investigates Three Car Accidents

Highway Patrolman Gary Henderson investigated three crashes last week. William M. Elmore of Cameron and Ophelia Jurney of Bay City collided when Elmore slowed to turn. Sonny Green Jr. of Irving and Floyd D. Mattocks of Bryan had a head on impact with Mattocks cited for driving on the wrong side. Josephine Frances Lott of Bremond and Cecil Monroe Warren of Waco collided when Warren failed to notice Lott turning left. Warren cited for following too close.

Burney Named Hearne Band Director in January

William C. Burney joined the Hearne school faculty in January as the new band director for the High School and Junior High. A Georgetown High School graduate, he studied at Southwestern University and earned a BA in music education from Southwest Texas State University. He taught band at Falls City from 1974 to 1976 before pursuing a master’s degree at Sam Houston State University.

Advisory Group Holds Meeting at Robertson County Lunch

The Robertson County citizens advisory council for the Central Brazos Valley Mental Health Center met at Robertson's Landing on Monday January 24. President Mrs Johnnie Clark opened the meeting and introduced Ruby Fisher coordinator for follow up care services who outlined duties in the region. Joyce Nixon handles medication follow up in surrounding communities. Mrs Bennie Long proposed a slate with Mrs Clark president Paul Williams vice president and Mrs Long secretary treasurer. A statistical report on CBVMHC patients in surrounding counties was presented by Falkce Klein. Bernice Deily was announced hired as a county mental health worker under CBVMHMR supervision. Williams special services cooperative director spoke on special education services for Robertson County students.

Scout Leaders Training Meet in Arrowmoon District

Arrowmoon District of the Boy Scouts of America hosts a pow wow training session for northern division adult leaders on Saturday February 26 at Sul Ross School Bryan. Bass Club Tourney Names Top Fishermen Of Year

The Booger County Bass Club held a January 2030 event on Lake Livingston from Cove Marina. Jim Webb finished first with Larry Corn second and a six pound nine ounce large bass. Gary Broadus took third. other competitors included B R Elliot, George Sisson, Glenn Dierr, Eugene Wilganowaki Jr, Jim Stovall, Vaughn Sawyer Jr, Jeme Mitchell Jr, and Don Hay. The top six for 1076 receive trophies: Bates first, Webb second, Dierr third, Meg fourth, Breadus fifth, Rick McNair sixth. Trophy prizes also go to the three largest bass of the year: Jeskle eight pounds, Elliott seven pounds 14 ounces, Dierr seven pounds four ounces. Officers elected: Elliot president, Dierr vice president, Archer Heyt Jr secretary-treasurer, May tournament director. board includes Sawyer and Bates.
