City crews repair sheared sewer line at Davis and Cypress

City workers, mobilized in force, repair a stubborn sewer break at the Davis Cypress intersection after a failed 50 foot cast iron replacement. Wet soil caused manholes to sink several feet, requiring rebuilding. Normal service is restored briefly while ground work continues. the line serves about one third of the city. Progress slowed by 10 to 15 foot deep excavation, protected by plank piling. Completion possible in 10 to 12 days, weather permitting.

Turman Names Yezak to Five Committees in Session

Speaker Jim Turman appoints Representative Herman Yezak of Bremond to five committees, naming him chair of the Military and Veterans Affairs panel and vice chair of Engrossed Bills, with seats on Agriculture Constitutional Amendments and Judiciary. Yezak, a watchdog past chairman, has coauthored three bills this session and weighs Governor Daniel’s budget proposals and university tuition plans.

Hearne Little League elects new officers

Hearne Little League Association met at West Side Elementary School to elect officers and plan the summer season. Jack Maris was elected president succeeding George F. Smith, who led the post for 10 years. Dr. B. K. Doherty became vice president and Mrs. Doris Bishop was secretary treasurer. Named managers are C. S. Massey, Nick Turnham Jr., Bob Stovall and James Baker, with coaches Jimmy Crook, Billy McCord, Phil Davenel and Lawrence Cotropia. Schedule to be announced later.

Regular Cub Scouts Pack 42 Holds January Meeting

A regular Cub Scouts meeting of Pack 42 at the East Side Cafetorium on January 26 featured Den 6 opening, introduction of two new dens and den mothers, and skits on South America by Dens 12 and 3. Den 7 received the Cubby award for attendance, denner badges were given to Larry Westbrook and Buddy Bingham, and assistant denner badges to Thomas Hanson and Louis Balentine. Larry earned a two year service star, Thomas a one year star. Mrs. Leo Zeig was honored for two years as Den Mother. Genius kits were distributed and Den 6 led the closing.

Mrs Glenn Brewer earns B S degree at Texas Christian

Mrs Glenn Brewer has completed the requirements for the Bachelor of Science degree at Texas Christian University and will receive the diploma at the June commencement. Daughter of Mr and Mrs Edwin M McNeel she graduated from Hearne High School and now teaches at Everman School.

Services Held For F Mitchell In Boone Prairie

Fayette Mitchell aged 80 died Tuesday evening in an Austin hospital. A Boone Prairie native and lifelong farmer, he was a Church of Christ member. Funeral services were held February 2 at 10 a m from Boone Prairie Church of Christ with interment in Boone Prairie cemetery. He is survived by a brother Dr John Mitchell of Tyler and three sisters Mrs George Brown of Franklin Mrs A C Rogers of Reagan and Miss Minnie Mitchell of Boone Prairie.

Votes to Expand Rules Committee by Teague and 13 Texans

Representative Olin Teague joined 13 Texas Congressmen Tuesday in voting to enlarge the House Rules Committee. Seven Texans voted against the move. In his weekly newsletter Teague argued expansion prevents one man from thwarting the majority and opposed removing the chairman, which would end the long-standing seniority system of Congress.

Caldwell Hornets Defeat Hearne Eagles 52 to 37

Caldwell Hornets beat the Hearne Eagles 52 37 at the Eagle gym. Caldwell relied on 6'4" Mynar with 22 points and 6'6" Hovrak with 18 points to pull away after a close first half. Hearne's Howard White led scoring for the visitors with 11 points. The Eagle B squad also lost to Caldwell.

Poll Taxes Issued in Lamar County Expected in 1950s

Tax assessor Lamar Closs told The Democrat that about 2500 Poll Taxes would be issued in the county this year. His office received several hundred applications on January 31, the deadline, and those forms are still being processed. An official count will appear in next week's Democrat.

Kenneth Johns Jr., son of Mr and Mrs Kenneth Johns and grandson of Mr and Mrs C P Henry, preached his first full length sermon at North Richland Hills Methodist Church in Fort Worth. The 16 year old Birdville High School sophomore received his license to preach last year and plans to study ministry at Southern Methodist University after graduation.

Hearne Voc Ag Course In Tractor Maintenance

Hearne High School Vocational Agriculture Department announces a five session tractor maintenance short course for adult farmers starting February 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the vocational agriculture building. Instructor Harold T. Wiedemann will lead demonstrations, with hands on practice and safety emphasis. Participants may attend all sessions through February 24, with a small entry fee and certificates for full attendance.
