Youth Presents Program To PTA Hearne PTA Meets

The January Hearne Parent Teacher Association gathering at Hearne High School auditorium heard five student delegates present a program titled Accepting Responsibilities In Our Heritage from the Texas Youth Conference. Anita Martine opened, Douglas Utecht spoke on the Student Parent Teacher Association, Phyllis Koch described films and Operation Teenager, Bill Sweet explained the teen jury, and Elaine Ely outlined the conference outcomes. Attendance awards were given to Hearne High School seniors and to West Side and East Side elementary students.

Free voting privilege boosts Robertson County registrations in 1967

Robertson County reached 3,682 free-registration voters before the January 31 deadline, with over 1,300 registering in the final week. Tax Assessor-Collector Lamar Cross released Wednesday figures showing a under 10 percent rise from the previous high, noting 1960 had 3,416 poll-tax registrations. Frankin office Closs led with 1,552, Hearne Chamber of Commerce 1,345, Calvert 343, Bremond 442. Hearne voters will use certificates for April 4 city elections featuring Mayor John Escoubas not seeking reelection, with candidates Jake Abrams and Jack Ramsay announced and alderman seats unsettled. The municipal plant sale set a 1966 high of 1,177 votes.

Brazos Valley Economic District Signs Agreement

The Brazos Valley Economic Development District board signed a grant in aid agreement with the U S Department of Commerce for economic planning at a January 25 meeting in the Brazos County Courthouse. The district covers Robertson Brazos Grimes Burleson Leon and Madison Counties with an executive committee listed by name and county.

Easter Seal Society aids Texas cripples in 1966

A record 16 031 crippled children and adults were assisted in 1966 by the Easter Seal Society for Crippled Children and Adults of Texas. In Robertson County, Jack Kelly notes 11 045 children and 4 986 adults received treatment and rehab services funded mainly by the Easter Seal Appeal, which opens February 20 and runs to Easter Sunday March 26.

New Instructor At Hearne High

Miss Billie Smith of Mexia is hired by the Hearne School Board as girls physical education instructor and health teacher to fill the vacancy created by Linda Hathcock's resignation. Smith assumed duties January 23 at Hearne High, holds a B S in physical education and health from Sam Houston State College, and is a National Volleyball official.

Representatives Seek Highway Improvements On 79 Alamo Highway

Texas officials and local leaders met at the State Highway Commission in Austin to push for upgrades on Highway 79 and to designate it The Alamo Highway. Sheriff reveals autopsy results in Ritchie death case

Bryan man David Ritchie, 24, was found dead in his car on December 18 after a Christmas party. Pathologists reported 45 percent blood alcohol, with cause listed as pulmonary aspiration from alcoholic intoxication. Witnesses said he had been drinking and was placed in the car. Sheriff Elliott noted five similar deaths that weekend in Texas.

Cotton Producers Meet February 8 In Hearne High

A cotton producers meeting is set for February 8 at 6 30 p m in the Hearne High School vocational agriculture building. Harry Smith county agent announced. The A M service cotton team Elliott Reeves and Almond will present on insect control mechanization chemical weed control harvesting and varieties. Elliott is the cotton specialist Reeves the cotton gin specialist and Almond an entomologist with extension service. Smith urges all area producers to attend.

Hearne Officer Involved In Sunset Strip Fight

Hearne patrolman Booker T. Morgan was hurt in a Friday night fight at 210 N. Alamo Street Sunset Strip. Charles Austin 21 of Hearne faces a disturbing the peace complaint filed by club owner Charles Perkins. Mayor John Escoubas said conflicting reports exist and no charges will be filed against Austin due to a technicality. Morgan, aided by two auxiliary officers, had tried to question Austin about broken bottles when the clash occurred. Austin is on probation for burglary in Franklin County.
