Members of the Hearne Parent-Teacher Association heard R. L. Hunt Jr., Director of Development Planning at Texas A&M College, urge parents to teach children to assume civic duties with strong religious and moral values. The meeting at Hearne High School covered attendance awards and upcoming panel discussions.

Mr and Mrs E Y Ely Jr along with Elaine and David traveled to Fort Worth last weekend to attend the Fat Stock Show and Rodeo and to visit relatives.

Salvation Army drives kickoff in Hearne church

Twenty five workers met with Rev Warren F Merritt for breakfast at Grace Methodist Church January 31 to launch the Salvation Army fund drive in Hearne. Merritt serves as campaign chairman with captains Edwin McNeel Sam Mounts Walter Smith Nick Turnham Jr Charles Blake Roy E Berryhill and George B Wilson Jr. The permanent committee includes Wilbur Strong chairman Ernest Herod the Rev John Windham and Merritt. B C Murray leads the colored section. Funds stay locally to aid those in distress.

Hearne Debaters Win In Tourney

Hearne High School debate team led by Sara Sue Wilson and Mark Ballard won two rounds at the Spring Branch forensic speech tournament defeating Waldrip High and Jesuit High of Houston. A second Hearne team with Penny Scalone and Joseph Cotropia also won two debates defeating Mount Carmel High and Kirwin High of Galveston as over forty schools competed including entrants from Miami Beach Florida.

Hearne FFA News Highlights Youth Beef and Swine Production

Hearne High School vocational agriculture students posted a profit of 8224.99 from productive projects last year. They completed 2.1 improvement projects and seven supplementary farm jobs. The beef cattle program led with 11 steers, 65 cows, 16 heifers, while swine production included 79 head for pork, 16 sows, five gilts. Strong steer sales boosted income and boosted interest in beef production, with some members registering breeding animals funded by steer profits.

Rites Wednesday For Mrs Menn

Mrs. Robert Menn 82 died Tuesday in a Rockdale hospital after seven years as an invalid. She lived in Rockdale most her life and with son Willie Menn in Franklin recently. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 PM at Philip and Luckey Funeral Home Rockdale with Oak Lawn Cemetery burial. Survivors include her husband of Rockdale, two daughters Mrs Walt Monroe of Long Beach California and Mrs L L Roland of Rockdale, one son R L Menn of Rockdale, three sisters and two brothers.

Wea t Side Eaglets Take Consolation in Marlin Tourney

The Wea t Side Eaglets finished consolation best in the Marlin Junior High tournament held January 25 26 27. Belton won top honors with Marlin second as Rosebud Reisel Rancier of Killeen Hillsboro and Mart also competed. Terry Adkisson of Hearne earned All Tournament honors alongside four others from 135 players. Adkisson scored 12 14 8 14 in the four games. The Eaglets now stand five wins six losses and were to face Caldwell juniors next in the local gym.

Hearne Eagles defeated Caldwell Hor nets 46 to 44 in Caldwell on Friday night January 26. Hearne opened with a 12-1 surge, led 22-16 at the end of the first half and 32-27 late. Matejowsky struggled for Caldwell while Langham scored 17 and Harris 10 for Caldwell. Gary O’Neal added eight points early.

Poll Taxes Paid Across Lamar County Near Deadline

Lamar County tax collector announced that about 3,000 residents paid poll taxes before the January 31 deadline. He said offices were flooded with last minute payments and an accurate tally would be ready next week after staff verify the numbers.

Study Courses At Grace Church Promoted For February

A series of study courses will be conducted weekly at Grace Methodist Church starting February 11 and extending through March 11. Sessions will be held each Sunday evening from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM in place of the regular service. The topic is Christian Missions In Latin American Countries. All ages invited to attend.

Robertson County May Issue 100000 For Road Improvements

A Texas law lets Robertson County issue and sell certificates of indebtedness up to 100000 to fund highway and road projects. The county would use proceeds for right of way and road construction or maintenance, with a March 2 deadline to accept or reject the commission’s joint proposal.

East Hearne Engineering Project Gets Underway

East Hearne moves on an engineering project after the city council hired Rady and Associates Inc. Edwin A. Apel of Fort Worth leads the team arriving with J. R. King Jr. A third crew is to join soon. The $5900 scope covers a survey of streets and drainage, recommendations on widths, a drainage plan, and detailed plans for curb levels and drainage patterns to guide the area’s development over four to six weeks.
