Call for bids on overpass in Hearne December 17
A notice in the Democrat invites bids for a new overpass at the south end of Market Street Hearne. Bids are due Wednesday December 17 with construction expected to begin in January if a bid is accepted. The two thirds mile bridge will span two railroad tracks and connect Market Street to the southern road toward Bryan.

New Phone Books Are Distributed in Hearne
Copies of the Hearne telephone directory have been mailed to homes and businesses this week. Floyd Reed of Southwestern Bell notes the directory has more listings than the prior edition, reflecting Hearne’s growth from about 1500 to nearly 1640 telephones. The 36 page guide, dated December 1952, features a green cover and roughly 1900 listings.

Vari colored bulbs were being placed in downtown awnings by city workmen this week. The lights replace the regular bulbs and will stay through the Christmas season.

Brock announces the opening of a Texaco Service Station at First and Market Streets, opening Saturday. Death claims Mrs T Tabor in Milano area
Funeral services for Mrs Tom Tabor were held at Milano Methodist Church with Rev T Miller Smith presiding. Interment followed at Milano cemetery. She died at 5 am Thursday at her daughter’s home from a heart ailment after two years of ill health. She was 77. Survived by her husband T J Tabor, a son Jack Tabor, a sister, three grandchildren and four great grandchildren among others.

Local Soldier Dies in Alaska Plane Crash
The War Department informed Vivian Newsome that her husband Airman First Class Sterling B. Newsome was killed November 22 when a C 124 Skymaster crashed into Surprise Glacier near Anchorage Alaska. All 24 aboard died and the Air Force investigates the cause. Newsome, a Scranton native, served eight years and was married at Bryan AFB during World War II. They last saw their child die in September.

Mrs. Charles S German age 67 died at her daughter's home in Hearne after surgery in Tyler. Funeral at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church with Rev. Warren F Merritt. Interment Norwood Cemetery. Survived by husband, a son in Austin, two daughters, two sisters, one brother and seven grandchildren. The couple moved to Hearne in 1938 from Holland Minnesota and lived also in California before returning to Texas.

Installation completed this week of a two ton white steel cross at Fourth and Magnolia in Hearne. Kempigh School chorus from Bryan will sing under the cross on December 17.
