The Hearne City Council accepted the fiscal 1976 77 audit with favorable comments from auditor Mike Snyder. Combined assets reached 5 949 606 with liabilities 1 160 593 and a 4 799 013 balance, up from 4 375 756 last year. Current assets stood at 772 924 versus 260 028 in current liabilities, and working capital rose to 512 896. Electric sales rose 17 percent but operating expenses climbed 23.7 percent, gas fuel 19.3 percent, pulling net income down 3.4 percent. Sewer income held steady while expenses jumped 45.2 percent, cutting net income 20.6 percent, yielding 1.53 spent per dollar collected in sewer. The auditors disavowed fixed asset balances due to inadequate records, noting no opinion on fixed assets. Tax collection efforts earned praise as delinquent taxes fell about 4 000. Council also declined alley garbage pickup after surveying 42 usable blocks, and debated highway alley routes. They expressed interest in Columbus Village with FHA, and approved applying for a Youth Activity Program with 80/20 federal funds to employ youths 15 18 at 2 65 per hour on public projects in Hearne.

The Hearne Jaycees will run a Toys For Tots program with collection trailers at Piggly Wiggly, Brookshire Brothers and Barrington Auto Parts to accept used toys for repair. Cash donations are invited. Restored toys will be given to children from lean Christmas families identified by local churches. Chairman is David Attaway.
